Cheap Areas to Stay in Malacca

Malacca is your proverbial melting pot. The provincial capital of Melaka has its Malay landscapes marked with traces of its Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial past. The city is also a centre of Peranakan culture, which is a fusion of local and immigrant Chinese cultures. For cheap Malacca hotels, the first place you can search is Jonker Street in Chinatown. This lively neighbourhood is packed with backpackers' hostels. If you're travelling with children, quiet and peaceful Ayer Keroh has plenty of affordable and family-friendly accommodations. More budget-friendly hotels are available in the Bukit Cina neighbourhood, also known as Chinese Hill.

Cheap Hotels in Malacca

The Explorer is a family-oriented budget hotel near Plaza Merdeka in Malacca Town. This large hotel features a rooftop terrace, a garden, and a playground, plus free Wi-Fi and several restaurants. Also in Malacca Town is the cosy Layang Layang Guesthouse. This conveniently located lodging option is only a short walking distance to many cultural attractions in the area. It offers free Wi-Fi, self-service laundry, and bike rentals. Another family-friendly discount hotel you can look into is Herald Boutique Hotel. This hotel provides cribs and infant beds on request, as well as free Wi-Fi. It's also located in Malacca Town.

Where to find cheap food in Malacca

Malacca is one of the best places to sample nyonya cuisine. Also called Peranakan cuisine, nyonya is fusion food, the combination of Malay and Chinese cooking traditions. Jonker Street is lined with eateries that sell cheap nyonya food. If you're keen on sampling Malacca street food, Jonker Street is also the place to go. Another spot to check out for authentic and affordable nyonya food is the Malacca city centre. The area also has restaurants that serve international cuisines. If you're not fussy about your surroundings, the back alleys of Jalan Bunga Raya have food stalls selling cockles and other shellfish.

Cheap Things to do in Malacca

The city centre of Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation recognises the city's long history marked by immigration and foreign conquest. The city centre has retained many of its colonial structures. One of them is Stadhuys, home of Malacca's Museum of History and Ethnography and one of the oldest Dutch buildings in Asia. Another is Porta de Santiago, the only part of the Portuguese fortress A Famosa remaining intact. Malacca is becoming highly westernised, but there are still some Malay villages where the traditional way of life is maintained. One such village you can visit is Kampung Morten along the Malacca River. The world's religions are well represented in Malacca, and you can visit their places of worship. Christ Church, for instance, is Malaysia's oldest Protestant church. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in the country. The floating Malacca Straits Mosque is considered an architectural wonder.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Malacca

Malacca does not have a comprehensive public transport system. Its municipal council runs a public bus service, but its schedule and routes are unclear. However, these buses are the most convenient way of travelling from one end of the city to the other end. If you're only going for a short distance, you should flag down a cycle rickshaw. As its name suggests, it's a carriage pulled by a bicycle that can fit two people. Malacca is a large city, but you can explore parts of it on foot. You can also rent a bicycle to get around.
