Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Hotels

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the focal point of Ba Dinh Square, famously the site of Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of independence from France, back in 1945. Resembling a Greek temple with its imposing pillars, the stocky grey granite structure stands at 70-feet tall and 135-feet wide. The plaza before it features 240 immaculately manicured grass squares, neatly separated by pathways. Within the mausoleum visitors are able to pay their respects to the former Vietnam president, whose embalmed body is displayed within a glass case.

Things to see

Once you’ve visited the mausoleum’s central hall, Ba Dinh Square has many more landmarks dotted around it. Among them is the decorative Presidential Palace, a stately lemon-yellow building built in the Renaissance and Beaux Arts style. For a little reflection in amidst the city’s hustle and bustle, Hoan Kiem Lake offers plenty of tranquillity. Here tai chi enthusiasts practice their art on the tree-fringed shores, whilst tourists and locals alike visit the vibrant 18th century temple that stands on the lake’s small island.

Nearby, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is a must-visit for culture vultures. Rooted in an 11th century art form, the theatre’s shows are performed over a pool of water to traditional music, recounting popular Vietnamese folk tales and legends. The Hao Lo Prison Museum occupies the gatehouse of the city’s historic prison, the only surviving part of the French complex built in 1896. Packed with engaging exhibits, it features a trove of prison-related paraphernalia, including a genuine French guillotine.

Where to stay

The hotels near Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum are scattered around the Ba Dinh district – Vietnam’s bustling political nucleus. Packed with the architectural remnants of its French occupation and centuries-old structures like the One Pillar Pagoda, it’s a historical blend of east and west. Directly east is the alluring Old Quarter. Laden with old shophouses, small temples, and picturesque pagodas, its narrow streets flow with noisy motorbikes and honking cars. Despite the chaos, it’s a great place to sample local street eats and shop for traditional wares. It’s also where you’ll find the city’s star attractions, like the sprawling Dong Xuan Market, and the serene Hoan Kiem Lake.

How to get to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

For those jetting in, Noi Bai International will most likely be your first port of call. Vietnam’s largest airport, it serves destinations throughout Asia, as well as cities in the Middle East and Europe, including London. Once you’ve landed it’s around 35 kilometres to Hanoi’s heart, which usually takes an hour by car. You’ll find plenty of taxis and public buses outside the airport’s terminal, though taxis will naturally be quicker. If you’re already within the region you can also make your way to the capital by train. Hanoi Railway Station is one of the city’s main terminals, situated just a few minutes from the Ba Dinh district.
