Find out more about Zizkov

Zizkov is the party capital of Prague, famous for its beer houses, wine harvest festival, and annual carnival. It’s also home to one of the city’s most easily spotted landmarks: Zizkov Television Tower, the tallest structure in Prague. This freewheeling, fun-loving neighborhood prides itself on its rebellious spirit and alternative culture. Its bohemian vibe has proved an inspiration for artists and poets through the centuries—it was here that writer Franz Kafka conceived some of his most renowned dystopian fantasies.

Things to see in Zizkov

One of Zizkov’s most famous landmarks is quite literally impossible to miss. The iconic television tower was erected in the mid-1980s and is heralded for its unconventional design and pioneering construction methods. Several of its characteristic “pods” are open to the public, ranging from an observation room with panoramic city views to a gourmet restaurant and café bar. Zizkov is also known for its statue of Jan Zizka on horseback, one of the largest equestrian statues in the world. This prized national monument occupies a prominent position on the very hill where the legendary Hussite general defeated the army of the Holy Roman Empire and Hungary. The neighborhood is also the location of several important cemeteries—atmospheric Olsany is especially notable for its stunning Art Nouveau monuments, while Kafka’s grave is one of the highlights of a visit to the New Jewish Cemetery.

Good for solo travelers

Zizkov is reputed to have more pubs per capita than any other European city district, so it’s not hard to find somewhere to make new friends over a frothy glass of world-famous Czech beer. The cosmopolitan population and wide range of discount accommodation in Zizkov make it a welcoming base for solo travelers. Particularly at carnival time or during one of the lively street festivals, Zizkov is a magnet for backpackers and party animals. Seek out a slice of alternative culture at the Palac Akropolis, hosting everything from DJ nights and drama to classical and rock concerts, or snatch a moment of solitude in one of the neighborhood’s many beautiful parks.

How to get to Zizkov

It’s easy to reach your Zizkov hotel from Vaclav Havel International Airport—just hop on a shuttle bus that connects with the excellent city-center metro network. Alternatively, if you’re arriving by train, Zizkov is close to the main Prague railway station, where it’s easy and convenient to hail a cab. Travel in Zizkov couldn’t be simpler, with several tram and bus lines crisscrossing the neighborhood.
