Things to see in Stare Mesto

At the heart of Prague, Old Town Square showcases all the storybook charm of the city. It’s flanked by the imposing Church of Our Lady and the grand Kinsky Palace museum, both well worth a visit, but its biggest draw is the Old Town Hall’s stunning Astronomical Clock, which fascinates tourists with its mesmerizingly complex dial displays. Admire the immense statue of Czech reformer Jan Hus as you wait for the clock to strike the hour. The curious spectacle played out by the figures around its face, which include the 12 apostles, Death, and a real-life trumpeter, is an unmissable experience. Municipal House is another Old Town must; its stately façade is matched by its inner grandeur, and its wonderfully elegant café is perfect for coffee and some Czech honey cake. At night, climb the 138 steps of the Old Town Bridge Tower for a spectacular illuminated view of Charles Bridge and the magnificent castle.

Good for architecture lovers

Prague is a city that has been shaping European architecture ever since the reign of Charles V. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town dates back to 1091, and the city’s history comes to life in its buildings’ somber yet exquisite exteriors. Old Town Square boasts an unparalleled medley of Baroque and Gothic architectural styles blended with Renaissance-era and Rococo façades. The intricate medieval streets sneaking away from the square take visitors past countless other architectural gems. See the National Library’s elaborate interiors in the Clementinum complex, or marvel at the famous statues lining Charles Bridge, an outstanding feat of engineering in itself.

How to get Stare Mesto

The easiest way to travel to Stare Mesto from Václav Havel Airport Prague is to take the Airport Express Bus. Its second stop is the central train station (Hlavni Nadrazi), just a 15-minute walk from the Old Town. You can also catch the 119 bus to Nadrazi Veleslavin and then the A metro to Staromestska in the Old Town. Taxis or shuttles are relatively cheap alternatives. Prague itself is renowned as a walkable city, and the Old Town is best explored on foot; hiring bicycles is also popular in the summer months.
