Lovely hotel, but watch out for price gouging
This is a beautiful hotel on a nice stretch of beach about 3 km from downtown Cozumel. Just don't be fooled by the cheap booking price. Once you get in the hotel, they make it very difficult to partake in any of the hotel's amenities unless you buy into the all-inclusive package. The all-inclusive package is $65/day per person for food and drinks. If you don't buy the package, it's $25 per meal and $7 per drink, but you have to prepay each time at the front desk. So if you're the kind of person who just wants to stay at your hotel all day, it's a great deal. If you're like us and like to get out and actually do things, but want to come back and enjoy a beer for less than $7, it's probably not for you.

Nice Hotel on the Beach
The first room we were given had a strong smell of mold so we requested another room. We ended up going to the lobby to get the keys right away and the new room came with a dehumidifier. To our surprise when we came back from dinner that night we founds ants all over the bed. We called reception who offered to change the sheets. We told them that we are not spending our stay in a room with ants on the bed. The staff sent us to 3 different rooms that night and all of them had ants. They said the last option was a room with 2 beds in that same building. We argued that we booked a room with a king size bed and suggested that they give us a room in the better building facing the beach. They said our fare was for a room in this building and asked us to stay in the room with 2 beds until the next day when they would be able to accommodate us to a room without ants. We looked at the last option and the beds in that room also had ants... Finally we got a call from reception apologizing for the inconvenience and we were upgraded to a fancier room overlooking the beach free of charge which was nice. I have to add that the staff was very friendly and apologized profusely. However, they HAVE to get rid of the mold/ant problem. 2nd - they should have upgraded us right away after the first highly unpleasant experience or at the very least inspect the rooms for ants before offering them. Other than this first day inconvenience our experience was overall good.

Good customer service
Overall is good, the only problem is that there is no internet for free anywhere else, but the lobby, also I was told by Expedia that check out was by noon and told me that my check out had to be done by 10:00 am I had to rush out the door. On the good side food is great, staff is friendly, great location.

Surpassed expectations.
We were very pleased with our room, staff and facilities. The grounds were well kept. The staff was friendly and seemed happy that we were there. Our housekeeper supplied us with water when requested and kept the room clean. The air conditioning was perfect for us. The view from our room balcony was excellent. Our requests (two double beds, no smoking and close to the elevator) prior to arrival were met.

Don't stay here.
We didn't get the all inclusive thinking we could get served at the 3 restaurants by just buying dinner. We were given a red bracelet which evidently meant "don't serve these people". We wanted to buy drinks or dinner but were denied because we didn't get the all inclusive package. Not until the third day were we told "you have to buy coupons for food or drinks". Very poor communication. Also the room smelled of urine, the sinks didn't drain, the bath tub was only usable for a shower and the sliding glass door didn't lock (a safety issue). We requested another room. We were moved on the third day and then the safe wouldn't work. Spent entire day moving and having to hang out in the room to get a new safe because my passport and cash were locked inside. Finally the manager gave us one free meal to compensate. Would have much rather enjoyed the beaches instead of these hassles.

Beautiful beach
Rooms were damp all the time, even the beds! We didn't go all inclusive so when we tried to buy drinks/snacks we weren't allowed without going to the front desk to pay for coupon for drinks! Very inconvenient!! Staff very helpful & friendly! We bought band for all inclusive for 24 hours, food OK at best!

nice hotel on clean beach
Our family of 3 enjoyed our stay at the Melia. We did not do the all inclusive, but rented a suite with kitchenette instead, so I can't comment on the food. We still had access to all the children's activities(ping pong, mini putt, soccer balls and footballs for the beach), which our 12 year old son enjoyed. The view from our room was amazing! Great Snorkeling off the rocks to the south of the hotel. Very clean and sandy beach at the hotel with small waves, great for swimming. Room was cleaned every day. Common areas were always clean. Staff was always friendly. Plenty of parking for rental cars. There was free WiFi in the lobby that was good for a quick email check or FB update, but not very fast or reliable. We would stay here again.

Disappointed
It wasn't what the website indicated. We weren't given the room/1 bed apt-condo we reserved. We were stuck in a studio. The internet isn't complimentary in the room, you have to pay additional. We usually had to ask several people to get answers and when told, I will get back to you, never happens. We would not recommend this hotel.

Not a 4 star hotel - 2 star! I left
I booked this hotel last min. The pics and reviews looked good. The price was too good to be true. Now I know why! I booked MVC which is separate from the Melia. I still don't understand what the difference is the hotel is 1. I arrived and was ushered into an office instead of front desk. No welcome drink - nada. I had decided to book the no meal plan. This was my mistake. MVC has this odd system that you have to buy tickets before eating or buying beer. For instance if you're hungry and want to stop in at the restaurant by your room you have to go to the office give them a flat 25.00 and get a hand written note then present it to the hostess. The employees didn't seem to friendly to the people that had to do this. The food was just okay - buffet style. After learning this system I was told they didnt have any ocean view rooms left. I was annoyed but okay fine. I get to my room. No king bed - 2 double beds. I finally get to the beach and it's covered in seaweed. It looked like they had raked the seaweed into piles along the beach. NO ONE was swimming in the water. I went for a walk along the beach and there was a ton of trash in the seaweed. I saw a baby doll washed up and other gross trash. I know the hotel can't predict seaweed but at least keep the trash off the beach. I stayed the night and decided to check out the next morning. The hotel is rundown, the beach is small and not kept. I left and went to Secrets which is way more but worth it !

Just ok hotel for normal price
First, i called several times to make sure we have one king size bed,,,nobody knew about my expedia reservation. We ended up with 2 beds... This hotel is old style in many ways,,not just desing,,but mostly how they operate it,,, i hate Time share business and this hotel didnt gave us chance to choose if we want to participate or not. upon check in, the front desk staff told us to wait few minutes for our key (we checked in at 4.30 so they plenty of time to prepare our room, so basically it was just stupid way to keep us there). They sat us down with time share sales person for 20 minutes. big turn off.... They also made fuss about checking out, they asked us to wait in the line and made pass to leave the hotel, which at the end just require extra work for them and waste of paper. The bellboy can just cut our braceletes on our way out and problem will be solved (for whatever reason they left us to leave with these on). We will not come back.

very relaxing
stayed based on reviews and pricing. Very much enjoyed the experience. View of ocean from balcony was great. Buffet food was tasty and good variety. Bed was comfortable. Only negative really is that marble tile can be dangerous and unsafe with wet feet. Beach had nice soft sand and although there was seaweed as well as in the water, it is to be expected. Need a taxi ride to get to town. There is a separate children's pool as well as a variety of beach activities.

Good hotel but FAR away from anything
Beautiful resort with many amenities. But only stay here if you get the all inclusive package otherwise you have no where to eat or drink since there is nothing around this hotel. Downtown is located 3.5 miles and although there are taxis it is expensive.

Bad News Timeshare in Cozumel
Not prepared for guests that are not time share related. Unable / unwilling to accept cash at the bar or restaurant. Actually, unfriendly to non-timeshare guests. Location is far out of town with no other establishments nearby. Therefore, no dinner for us. The checkin clerk said breakfast was included, but in the morning ( by then we were hungry ) we were told it was not. Couldn't get out of there fast enough!

Over rated!
The room smell horrible, one day without water and other day without hot water. The obligate you to purchase the "all inclusive" because there are no restaurants near and they don't accept cash on their restaurants. If you want to eat something from the "snack bar" you have to pay $25.
