About this villa

Casa Que Canta (House that Sings) is a Spanish style villa with a central courtyard and 2nd level terrace facing the ocean. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VILLA EASILY SLEEPS 10 BUT THE RENTAL RATE VARIES WITH THE NUMBER OF GUESTS DUE TO ADDED COST. BASE RATE IS FOR 5 GUESTS WITH A $25 PER PERSON PER NIGHT ADDED COST FOR MORE THAN 5 PEOPLE.

ALSO BE SURE TO READ OUR REVIEWS. GUEST CONSISTENTLY GIVE US HIGH RATINGS. The bedrooms are all on the 2nd level - each has a terrace. One has a king beds, two have queens and twins.. We also offer on site all inclusive meals at an added cost per person. Sandra is an excellent chef and has always gotten high praise from our guests. The villa is a located 5 miles north of Mahahual Mexico. The beaches are white sand with a coral reef just 250 yards off shore. Ideal for swimming and sun bathing. Area is know for world class snorkeling and diving. Reef in front of the property has a number of beautiful corral heads. Snorkeling & dive trips also available in nearby Mahahual. There are many restaurants, fun shops, & great Mayan ruins near by. If you like to fish there is both world class Fly fishing for Tarpon and Bonefish and excellent off shore fishing available for charter in town. Fishing is consistently good.

Things to do at Casa Que Canta: The area is rich in Mayan culture and history. Nearby ruins of Chacchoben are a must visit along with Kohonlich and Dzibenache if you have time. Lake Bacalar and the old Spanish fort also make a great day trip. The area is also rich in Cennotes some of which are almost too beautiful to describe. Hidden Worlds Cenote has been featured on a National Geographic special.

Majahual itself is a fast growing Mexican fishing village with many good restaurants and nice shops. Very busy on cruise ship days, but extremely quiet in between. Beaches are wonderful.

Water Sports: Traveling to Mexico for many is all about the Ocean and the beach. The Costa Maya is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico - almost all of them protected by the worlds 2nd largest barrier reef. The reef at Casa Que Canta is only 200 meters off shore. This means the swimming is exceptional - no currents - no rip tides - extremely safe even for small children. The waves are very light and the depth drops off slowly - you can walk out 100 meters and still be waist high. The reef provides great snorkeling - tons of corral - fish - even an occasional lobster if you watch closely. The nearby fisherman go out almost everyday and can provide fresh fish for use on the grill. Or if you like bring a spear gun and try getting your own.

Snorkeling from the kayaks we have is great on the calmer days and very safe.

Great house, great owner; almost perfect.

We had a wonderful stay, joe is an excellent host. I’d agree with all the good things others have had to say about this place. Definitely have Sandra cook you a meal, so good! However, there are two things that aren’t in the description of the house that I wish we’d have known before we booked. First, the owner lives here, so it isn’t your own private house on a beach. This could be a plus though, as if anything goes wrong, he is right there to fix it, and as joe is a super nice guy, we enjoyed getting to know him. Second, we mainly booked this house due to its description of a/c in the bedrooms and its reliable power source as this house is on the mahahual power grid. However, the ac is only run from 8pm-8am due to cost of running it during the heat of the day, which ironically is when you need it, especially if you have a little one like we do and want them to nap in the heat of the day. This may not be a big deal at all though if your out of the house enjoying the area during the day. I want to say though, joe made an exception for us in the evening and turned the ac on whenever we’d put our daughter down for the night, which was usually around 7. We really appreciated that. All in all, a great trip, fair price for the house and an owner and care takers who will work hard to make your trip a success. As long as your aware of what your getting, I’d highly recommend.

    Very nice stay

We stayed at Joes home for a week and we had a wonderful time. His home worked well for us as it was close to town yet away enough. Nice little beach to relax and enjoy morning coffee. The bedrooms were large and the showers had great hot water and pressure, which is rare down there. Joe was very accommodating and hospitable. His caretakers were very nice but the communication barrier kept us from visiting much with them. Although one day they brought us out to the beach, a beautiful plate of delicious ceviche they had made.

Great house and location just what we were looking for.

I searched high and low for a place "away from everything" and this property is, yet only 10 minute's drive to the small town of Mahahual. (limited shopping, do your shopping in Playa del Carmen, stock up - especially on wine and beer) The road here is good, so easy in and out. We always had the beach to ourselves and comfortable beach furniture. Good snorkeling is about a half hour's drive away, and this was important to us; you can snorkel the reef in front of the property and use kayaks to get to it but it takes a good 20 minutes to paddle out. The house is spacious and well kept, Joe, the owner is present for questions and assistance, (but he is discreet and generally not in the guest's space) he lives in his part of the house. The Mayan house -helpers were super, really lovely helpful and cheerful people who prepared us excellent meals most nights; we bought fish and they BBQed it, probably some of the best lobster and fish I have ever had. The house has comfortable spaces as described on the site. All rooms are spacious and well kept, ample towels and beach towels are supplied. I would happily send friends and family to stay here.

    Absolutely wonderful!

We stayed six nights with six people and everyone loved it! Let me say first that if you want to go to Mexico and be a pampered tourist, this might not be a good choice for you. It's a four hour drive from Cancun, down a little-maintained beach road and it's a house with shared space. On the other hand, if you're an adventurous traveler and can roll with things and have fun wherever you go, make haste to Casa que Canta. The house is a duplex and you'll have access to a huge kitchen and living area with an outdoor seating area, rooftop with pool, three bedrooms (five beds), and two full baths. The courtyard, second floor sitting area, beach and two ground floor half baths are all shared. It all works out. The owner, Joe, is super nice and likes to visit and also likes to go off and do his thing. The brother-sister caretaking team is also there as much as you like. Absolutely have them make you some meals - awesome food and such a treat to have it made, served and cleaned up! Just be aware that you pay them directly in cash before leaving. We didn't catch on to that and had to scramble the last night to find the money. Back to rolling with things and having fun: the beach is pretty much private. There's an empty lot next door, and abandoned house that's supposedly soon to be torn down and reconstructed (who really knows?) and another duplex. When we arrived, the beach was covered in feet of sargasso grass. But you know what? Wade through it, and in seconds, you're in the beautiful, sandy bottom swimming water. Just lovely. Also, it blew back out in two days. There are beach dogs, who sometimes bark. There's a cat who thinks he owns the place and there's a rooster down the road who (guess what?) crows before dawn. We loved every single moment spent at Casa que Canta. If you're a traveler and not a tourist, you will, too.

It’s a beautiful property and worked well for 6 of us. If you want to be more out of the fray it is a great place to go and totally relax!!! If you want to site see the area it’s at least an hour from Bacalar.

    Absolute Heaven

Our family of 11 people stayed at Casa Que Canta over Christmas and New Years this year, 2018. Everything was perfect. The neighborhood is very rural, no near by all inclusive resorts and the house is beautiful. It has a very Spanish /Mexican vibe with many charming architectural details. The owner’s description, as written on the VRBO site, is accurate in every way. Sandra and Emmanuel were excellent cooks and company. They were there when needed but were never intrusive. Other reviewers have mentioned the seaweed. When we arrived there was very little weed and we were able to spend a great deal of time in the ocean. By the time we left, New Years Day, the weed had increased and it would have been hard to enjoy the ocean waves which had so occupied our children. All in all it is a lovely place to relax and enjoy warm sun and breezes.

    Clean, Friendly, and Beautiful

Our stay was really pleasant. We arrived later in the evening and were immediately met by Sandra, Emmanuel, and Joe. After a quick but helpful tour and orientation we were left to find our rooms and get situated. Joe was always there to fix or help with any issues that came up. Sandra and Emmanuel were also available every time we needed them. The beach was nice and is kept pretty clean considering all the grass and stuff that washes up. It was windy most of the days we were there so we didn’t do much on the beach other than walk along the shore and enjoy the view. The nearby town of Mahahual was great. Only about a ten to fifteen minute drive. We spent most of our time at Big Mama’s. Nice staff, good service, great shrimp empanadas, and a super beach for wading or swimming! Had dinner at Luna de Plata - great food! Overall great trip and place to stay!

    Beautiful villa with great hosts.

My family of 5 stayed here for 4 nights and had a great time. The accommodations are very comfortable. Sandra and Emmanuel were great hosts and we enjoyed Sandra’s cooking. Sitting out under the palm trees watching the ocean was very relaxing.

Facilities were as expected. Road into facilities not maintained .large potholes and mudholes.

We were gone most days and returned evening. Usually we provided our own breakfast and dinner facilities were comfortable and nice breeze from sea.

    Most relaxing place on earth

My husband and I came back, with our friends, after our 1st stay last year. We love the location, the villa, the lush green and well maintained property, and the atmosphere of this place. Joe took a daughter of our friends to scuba diving trip, and she loved it, life-long memories. He also recommended us to go to Los Rapidos de Bacalar, which was very enjoyable and perfect for a day trip. Sandra and Emmanuel took good care of us, and cooked delicious dinner for us twice. Joe is a great host and went all the way to make our stay enjoyable.
