Find out more about Yau Ma Tei

Yau Ma Tei is known as the “city that never sleeps,” but defies attempts to pin it down. This historic district stretches across Kowloon, from the Typhoon Shelter harbor in the west to King's Park in the east. Among its densely-packed high-rises, you'll come across a variety of museums and a cinema that hosts opera. The one certainty is that you'll gather a treasure trove of memories here—from eating delicious noodles at a cha chaan teng (tea house), to choosing fruit in the brightly lit stalls of its crowded night markets.

Hotels in Yau Ma Tei

Like much of Kowloon, Yau Ma Tei is something of a refuge for the cost-conscious in an increasingly expensive Hong Kong. Most of the budget hotels in Yau Ma Tei are tucked down the side streets off Nathan Road. Tea house lodgings, guest houses, and micro-hotels offer some of the lowest room rates in Hong Kong. There are a few mid-range hotels here too. The Cityview is a large, plush hotel that offers a choice between buffet, Cantonese, and Thai cuisines at its 3 restaurants. CHI Residence 279, by contrast, is a small but sleekly styled Ya Ma Tei aparthotel which is highly rated by guests for its affordable, comfortable rooms.

Things to see in Yau Ma Tei

Tin Hau Temple, a Taoist temple that was once the heart of this former fishing village, is one of many historic attractions in this neighborhood. Set among banyan trees in a quiet back water, it's dedicated to a local sea goddess. Close by you'll find Temple Street, whose night market stretches into neighboring Jordan. It sells all manner of toys, electronic gadgets, and clothes. Yau Ma Tei Theatre is another intriguing attraction, a 1920s-era Art Deco building that was once a cinema and is now a venue for Cantonese opera. The offices for the opera company are found in a standout 19th-century building known locally as the Red Brick House, a former pumping house. Lastly, don't miss out on the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Museum. It celebrates the 140-year history of the area's hospitals, and is housed in a marvelous building that effortlessly blends Eastern and Western influences.

Good for budget travelers

Unlike other Kowloon districts that have seen upmarket developments lift up their profile, Yau Ma Tei remains a resolutely residential district, proud of its history and reputation as an affordable place to stay. Book a Yau Mei Ta budget hotel and you can look forward to browsing for bargains in the nearby flea markets, or eating deliciously inexpensive meals at the many cha chaan tengs in the area. And thanks to its location on the Ensue Wan metro line, the rest of Hong Kong's exciting cityscape is only a short ride away.
