Machiya Street in Miyajima, Aki, is designated as one of The Three Views of Japan. It's a calm street on the main mountain side of Omotesando Shopping Street, and is lined with retro-modern inns, shops, and galleries that incorporate traditional machiya (townhouse) architecture and modern sensibilities.
This used to be Miyajima's main street, but after World War II, tourists flowed to Omotesando Shopping Street instead. However, the historical townscape here started attracting attention again in recent years, and its popularity as a place to take a walk led to its rechristening as "Machiya Street". At night, paper-covered lanterns glow on the eaves of the townhouses, creating a lovely warm atmosphere.

Bar Alegre
An authentic bar with a very Japanese atmosphere
- Nightlife
Bar Alegre is a hidden gem. In this lovely space you'll hear the sound of cocktails being shaken by the national prize-winning bartender.
The height of the entrance door is only about 130 cm, and it was deliberately designed this way to resemble a miniature tearoom entrance. Once inside, it's as though all of the customers (including samurai, perhaps) abandon their social position (or put down their swords, to stretch the metaphor), bow their heads deeply, and spend their time informally relaxing and enjoying the company. In addition to seasonal fresh fruit cocktails and original cocktails, the bar also has a great selection of whiskeys. This is a fine place to spend the evening.

MAC
An atmospheric bar rooted in Hiroshima for more than 40 years
- Nightlife
MAC is a bar that has been operating in the middle of Hiroshima for over 40 years. It's a cosy place with many, many regulars.
The original owner was a local legend who died after the first store was temporarily closed due to the deterioration of the building in which it was located but was reopened by a business partner in 2017. A hugely impressive collection of CDs covers the walls. Most of the music is American rock that the original owner loved, but feel free to make requests for whatever kind of music you like. This is the kind of bar where everyone knows your name.
