Top neighbourhoods in Ipoh

Taman Jubilee

Taman Jubilee offers an authentic slice of Malaysian suburban life away from Ipoh's tourist buzz. The quiet residential streets lined with terraced houses provide a peaceful escape where you can watch local families go about their daily routines. Area kopitiams and mamak stalls serve up delicious, wallet-friendly Malaysian dishes that won't break the bank. Budget-conscious travellers will appreciate the homestays and guesthouses that cost less than city centre accommodation. Getting around requires some planning—grab cars are readily available, but public buses run infrequently. The neighborhood's calm atmosphere makes evening strolls pleasant, though most shops close early.

Jawa

Jawa offers a slice of authentic Javanese life tucked away in Ipoh's quieter corners. Stroll through narrow residential lanes where daily life unfolds naturally—children play in streets while aromas of lemongrass and coconut milk fill the air. Traditional warungs serve up delicious gudeg and soto ayam for curious food adventurers. Small family-run shops sell colourful spices and sambal varieties at prices well below city averages. The area quiets down by 9pm, with minimal tourist infrastructure but maximum cultural immersion. Getting around requires ride-sharing services or walking the uncrowded streets where locals offer polite nods to respectful visitors.

Taman Canning

Taman Canning gives you a slice of real Malaysian suburban life without the touristy buzz. The area hums with local kopitiam coffee shops and mamak stalls where you can feast on authentic Malaysian dishes for pocket-friendly prices. Kids play in small area parks while neighbors chat across front gardens of colourful terrace houses. Perak Stadium sits nearby for sports fans. Getting around is easiest with Grab ride-sharing since public buses run infrequently. Budget guesthouses and family-run homestays offer accommodation at half the price of central Ipoh spots. The quiet streets make for peaceful evening strolls, though don't expect nightlife—this place winds down after sunset.

Ulu Kinta

Ulu Kinta offers a genuine slice of Malaysian suburban living, far from tourist crowds. The neighborhood's multicultural fabric shines through its diverse temples and family-oriented atmosphere. Nature lovers will appreciate the lush tropical surroundings, with limestone caves and therapeutic hot springs just a short drive away. Kinta City Shopping Centre and the local night market provide glimpses into everyday Malaysian life. Small family-run kopitiams serve authentic Malaysian breakfast fare while budget-friendly homestays offer cultural insights from friendly local hosts. Getting around requires planning as public transport is limited, but the area's peaceful streets make for pleasant morning walks among frangipani and bougainvillea blooms.

Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh

Experience authentic Malaysian life in Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh, a peaceful residential township outside Ipoh's bustling centre. Wander through local markets where the aromas of nasi lemak and char kway teow fill the air. Kids play in small area parks while locals go about their daily routines, creating a genuine suburban atmosphere far from tourist crowds. Affordable guesthouses and family-run lodgings offer a homely base, with prices significantly lower than central Ipoh. Local kopitiams and mamak stalls serve delicious meals for just a few ringgit. While public transport is limited, Grab rides are readily available to take you to central attractions like Perak Stadium.

WEIL Hotel

WEIL Hotel

8/10 Good
"The hotel is location is great. I stayed 4 nights in the Superior King Room on th 12th floor, it was spacious and clean, bed was good but pillows can be better. However the toilet paper is very hard and rough, I have expected better for this kind of hotel. Last day the housekeeper forgot to give bathtowels, I called the receptionist and requested for new ones, but she seems not believing me and want to check first. I found it very strange, why would I lie about it. She did sent someone, then the housekeeper wants to check again in my room. Then I feel offended, not sure why they want to keep checking and searching for something there is not there. That's waste of my time. Most of the staff are friendly and nice, but there was a staff who quite has a big mouth, stopping me to appraise the piano on the first level, well there were no sign that guests are not supposed to play on it, I apologised for playing it. but he seems very upset and kept saying that is not meant for play and only decoration. That's very rude of him, if you don't want people to touch it then don't put the piano there. As a world traveller pianos are put in airports, train stations, malls etc for piano users. These last two points kinda ruin my mood during the stay, very unfortunate."

10/10 Excellent
"We love the hotel’s Art Deco/contemporary luxury design, making it a truly unique and beautiful property. A lot of thought goes into every aspect from the impressive reception lobby to the luxurious bed linen. The welcome tea hosted on the Executive Floor lounge is a nice and hospitable gesture (well done)! Don’t miss going up to the rooftop garden. The views are amazing! The staff are helpful and friendly. Special mention of the Concierge Mr Amin who has a cheerful smile for everyone. The buffet breakfast is one of the best we have had. We will definitely choose to stay at the D’Kelly again when we next visit Ipoh. We wish the 1969 D’Kelly brand will carry across other Malaysian cities. Book it, you will not regret it."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Ipoh

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable months to visit Ipoh are March, October, and November, when hotel prices are generally lower. For those looking to explore the city's significant landmarks, cultural sites, and historical attractions, a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. This timeframe allows visitors to appreciate the budget-friendly experiences available, such as sampling local coffee, visiting temples, exploring caves, and enjoying the natural beauty of hilly rainforests and hot springs. With careful planning, you can discover great value for money while immersing yourself in Ipoh's rich heritage.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To uncover exclusive hotel deals in Ipoh, visit the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where you may discover discounted rates close to your travel date. By enabling email alerts or push notifications from Hotels.com, you could find out about flash sales and special last-minute promotions, helping you seize opportunities to save. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you're informed about any changes in availability or pricing for your preferred hotels, so you can plan a last-minute getaway with ease.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates could help you find a more favourable rate for your stay in an Ipoh hotel. For those in search of distinctive accommodations, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised experience and may offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you if the price for your chosen dates is higher or lower than the average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we can suggest alternative dates that may help you find a more attractive rate.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive; however, with Ipoh's superb public transport links, you may find a more affordable independent hotel located further out that remains well-connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money available. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
