We spent a night in Portloe and were impressed with the location of the Lugger and the kindness of the check-in staff, who helped us get into our room a bit early so that we could dress for an event.
After booking a 260-pound room at a quaint B&B, I was surprised when we were asked if we wanted to pay another 18 pounds for the very simple breakfast they set out in the mornings. Our room was in the back of the second building, so our only small window was about two feet from the next building, and our bed faced the bathroom door. I understand you can't always get the room with the view, but the rooms are nothing special on the backside. I would normally hope a 5-star hotel would have a few nice details, like a cart for the drinks so you're not balancing the kettle on the bedside table, or a nespresso machine rather than two instant coffee packets.
Overall, it's a lovely stopover, but I'd only return if they offered a steep discount and promised a bit of a view.
