    Excellent hospitality

We were the only occupants of the hotel the night of our stay, yet we received an excellent breakfast which was served early for our convenience. The hospitality was outstanding.

This inn is a great place to stay if you are interested in history. It is not, however, a fancy hotel with all of the amenities. The staff is small, the building is old, and the location is on a busy street. Senior citizens with mobility issues may find it difficult to navigate. But, the history embedded in this hotel is unique and well worth a visit. According to the staff it has been in existence and operational continuously since it was built in 1797, the year that George Washington finished his time as president. It initially served as a stagecoach stop for a while and it was commandeered as a base of operations for both Jubal Early and Phillip Sheridan during the Civil War battle for control of the Shenandoah Valley. The inn has a tavern and a restaurant which serves a wonderful breakfast for guests. The restaurant is closed during the middle of the week so if you are looking to eat there in the evening you may want to check the restaurants hours. For us it was a wonderful place to stay and I recommend it highly.

Go with the right expectations. This hotel is a piece of history. It is OLD. That means there is peeling paint, old fixtures, and creaky, slanted floors. It's like staying in a museum. There is so much to see! The staff exceeds all expectations and goes above and beyond. There's really not much in the town that you can walk to but it's with 20 minutes of Skyline drive and other parks. There aren't any treats and items set out for guests like other b&b we've stayed at which forces you to visit the restaurant. They do give a discount to guests. The breakfast was simple yet delicious, again, service was exceptional. They also aren't big on the toiletries, one bar of soap and one tiny shampoo is all you get. Come prepared. The atmosphere and character of this place is amazing. You feel like you are in a different time. The staff is truly service oriented, kind, and personable. It's an experience.
