Stockholm boasts no shortage of natural beauty and no trip there would be complete without a visit to one of the best lakes and beaches in the Swedish capital. You'll find everything from open-air bathing spots along shallow beaches, which are perfect for families, to craggier outcrops where couples can enjoy a romantic picnic in the evening sunshine.

Or if you'd like to do a little more than simply take it easy, several spots also offer pulse-raising activities and exercise trails. Why not combine sunshine and bathing with a spot of kayaking or fishing, for example?

Hordnesskogen is a well-organised hiking area heavily frequented by people from Fana and Ytrebygda. Good gravel roads attract many families with children and dog walkers out with their furry friends. Fitness enthusiasts of all levels can enjoy the well-lit trails right up until eleven o'clock at night, plus the outdoor exercise equipment. Wheelchair users also find it easy to get around this trail network.

Good parking opportunities and marked trails attract people from outside the area. If the gravel roads get a bit too dull, the many off-track paths allow you to explore the forest further, and when hunger strikes, there are plenty of tables and benches to have your lunch at.

Munkholmen is a historic islet in the Trondheim Fjord that has been used for both military and religious purposes, but which is now an open-air area with a permanent boat connection to the mainland. From May to September, you can take the boat from the center to swim and maybe barbecue on the beach outside the fortress walls or sunbathe and relax on the lawns in the fortress.

The boat to Munkholmen departs from Ravnkloa in Trondheim, and the trip out to the islet is only 2 kilometers long. Once there, you can buy simple food at the café, or enjoy what you bring with you, and of course admire the beautiful surroundings and views in all directions. Those interested in history can join a guided tour, which is arranged once an hour, every day.

Møhlenpris is just a short distance from Bryggen, but if you intend to go there on foot, be prepared to go both up and downhill. The most pleasant way to Møhlenpris from the city centre is through the upper part of Nygårdsparken, with the University on your right.

You eventually reach a residential area with pretty parks and a hidden treasure in the form of Bergen Technical Museum. There are plenty of cafés here, a soccer pitch and heavy industry that still fills the area around Damsgårdsundet.

Trøndelag food festival is the country's largest local food festival where you can get a taste of the Trøndelag food culture. During the festival, the streets in the center of Trondheim are filled with food stalls bursting with fresh ingredients and ready-made food and wonderful scents, not to mention a bustling crowd.

The exciting festival has annual themes, and historical food, roots and coastal flavors are just some of the more recent ones. Local food is on the menu here, and while you sample the many different goodies, you can also try some new beverages. Good food and drink go together, and it's therefore no coincidence that the food festival takes place at the same time as the brewery festival. Food courses, lectures and competitions are run as part of the festival, as well as activities for children and young people, so this really is a festival with a wide appeal.

One of the most photographed sights in Trondheim is Gamle Bybro, or Bybrua as it is also known. The bridge was built at the end of the 17th century and crosses the Nidelven, connecting Midtbyen with Bakklandet. A dear child has many names, or so the saying goes, and the bridge is also called "The portal of happiness" after the lyrics "«Nidelven stille og vakker du er».".

The bridge's unique design, idyllic location and view of the old, brightly colored coastal houses have made it one of the city's most visited attractions. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore the beautiful surroundings, and if you like taking photos, then this part of town is a must!

Sofusstien is a short, steep path from Vinddalen opposite Jordalen in Eidsvåg up to Stangelifjellet. It is named after the terrier Sofus, who broke a foot here when it chased a deer. Local hiking enthusiasts cleared the deer trail, so that it is now a passable path that has become a popular route up the ridge north of Jordalen.

The mountain narrows further up and peaks such as Stangelifjellet and Ulskebjørnen have a great view of Eidsvåg. This is breezy hiking terrain with several route choices to vary the return trip. If you take in Vinddalen on your hike and walk the steep path down from Ulskebjørnen, you can visit the pretty little Stallane farm, which is idyllically located up in the hill.

In Stavanger Botanical Garden you can see, smell and admire many plants and flowers from all over the world. You can follow the cozy paths through the perennial garden, the herb garden and the geographical garden, while the large park is great for picnics, play and fun.

The garden is great to visit all year round, but in spring and summer it comes to life with colorful flowers and shrubs, which delight both the eye and the soul. There are thousands of different plant species in total, so don't be surprised if you come across some you've never seen before. The botanical garden is not far from the university, and you can get there by automobile, bus and bike.

Djupvika is another treasure along Ladestien and Strindfjorden in Trondheim that offers green neighborhoods, a beach, refreshing salt water, seaweed and kelp. This is a great place to sit and wait for the northern lights, which many dream of seeing during their lifetime.

You can walk, cycle or drive here, and if you bring a blanket, you can lie down on the grass and look at the evening sky, which will hopefully change color eventually.

Granåsen is the main winter sports arena in Trondheim and the World Cup in jumping is held here annually. The place is a great activity area both in winter and summer. It is the gateway to the countryside in the summer and a perfect set-off point for many of the ski slopes in the area in the winter.

The facility is mostly used for competitions, training and other events, but the runs are open to the public. The ski stadium itself and the competition runs on Granåsen are reserved for those on skis, so if you are thinking of hiking, tobogganing or barbecueing, you must use other neighborhoods in the terrain.
