Five Star Hotels in Shanghai

Steely skyscrapers housing luxury hotels glisten under the sun and the marble clad walkways of glitzy malls squeak as shoppers totter in and out of designer stores –Shanghai is glitzy, glamorous and always on the go. But that's not to say it doesn't have a softer side. Venture down narrow alleyways and you'll find traditional tea houses, ancient, lantern-lit temples and art deco buildings hiding in the city's shadows.

Things to see

The Bund makes an impressive starting point to any trip to Shanghai. Stroll along this waterfront's always bustling boulevard and admire its majestic art deco and neoclassical buildings, relics from Shanghai’s colonial heyday. Shoppers will want to head to Nanjing Road which thrums with people day and night as they spill in and out of stores, stopping, occasionally, for a steaming cup of tea in an authentic tea houses. Trendsetting Xujiahui's Shopping District is another must for those on the hunt for one of a kinds. Nearby, colorful statue-shrouded Jing’an Temple’s a serene spot for some reflection away from the urban hubbub. Make a beeline for Pudong Riverside Promenade’s at dusk when the balmy nighttime air has a cooling breeze from the Huangpu River and twinkly lights from Pudong’s skyscrapers reflect in the glassy waters.

Hotels in Shanghai

Shanghai's a super stylish city, and its selection of luxury hotels certainly won't disappoint. You'll find Shanghai 5-star hotels housed in soaring skyscrapers where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the cityscape beautifully and rooftop restaurants offer an intimate escape away from the thronging streets far below. There are quirky boutique hotels with sunken beds and designer sofas and sprawling palaces with marble-clad lobbies and huge, grand suites. Shanghai 5-star hotels are also home to sensual spas with huge swimming pools often offering city views and indulgent pampering rooms where you can enjoy a soothing massage.

Where to stay

Shanghai’s divided in half by the Huangpu River. On one side is Shanghai proper, where most of the city’s top attractions and colonial appeal can be found. If you stay around the Bund you’ll be surrounded by historic buildings, and find plenty of 5-star Shangahi hotels here. Pudong's also home to its fair share of luxury hotels, many of which are found in super-modern skyscrapers. Nanjing Road’s a buzzing neon-drenched spot with traditional tea rooms and a mishmash of stores. Close to this, Xuhui mixes European flair with modern city living in the French Concession, where colonial mansions line magnolia tree-lined boulevards brimming with pavement cafés close to thriving Xujiahui Shopping District.

How to get to Shanghai

Pudong International Airport’s a major transit hub and the main gateway into the Shanghai. A hi-speed Maglev train can take you from the airport to Longyang Road Station in Pudong in mere minutes, and from here you can pick up the metro. Otherwise you can take the metro direct from the airport, hail a cab or arrange a transfer with your hotel. Smaller Hongqiao International Airport serves mostly domestic routes and is linked to the city via the metro.
