Cheap Areas to Stay in Shanghai

Home to ancient Chinese temples, European colonial-era buildings, and glitzy skyscrapers, the bustling city of Shanghai has much to offer the wide-eyed – and hungry – tourist, as its culinary scene is definitely one to write home about. Low-cost lodging can be found all over the city. Consider staying in the Huangpu district, which has several historic landmarks. Nanjing Road, a 5.5-km stretch that's widely considered the world's longest shopping street, is in this neighbourhood. You'll also find several cheap hotels in Hongkou district, which features Hongkou Stadium and Lu Xun Park, and in the Pudong district on the east side of Huangpu River.

Cheap Hotels in Shanghai

Have an enjoyable stay at Campanile Shanghai Bund Hotel, whose casual, modern rooms feature flat-screen TVs, rainfall showers, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel is just a 12-minute walk from The Bund, and it has a chic restaurant and bar with mismatched furniture and a bright yet cosy ambience. Jingyue 99 Hotel - Jiangzhen is an unpretentious hotel in Pudong, providing very few amenities apart from its modest rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, rooms at Baolong Homelike Hotel Jingan Branch Shanghai are on the small side, and feature dark wood furniture and Chinese décor. There's a bar and a garden.

Where to find cheap food in Shanghai

Budget-conscious foodies who are adventurous enough to duck into alleys and look for hole-in-the-wall joints will surely be rewarded with scrumptious meals that won't break the bank. Keep an eye out for small, low-key restaurants that serve hand-pulled noodles, fried pork buns, and soup dumplings at low prices, or sample scallion pancakes and deep-fried local pastries at roadside stalls. Alternatively, just head to one of the popular food streets. Chenghuangmiao Market, situated in Shanghai's old town, is surrounded by traditional Chinese temples, while Wujiang Road Food Street has plenty of gastronomic offerings to keep your taste buds happy.

Cheap Things to do in Shanghai

A trip to Shanghai isn't complete without a stroll along The Bund, the city's iconic mile-long promenade. Marvel at the colonial buildings in various architectural styles, then take photos at the water's edge with Pudong's dazzling skyscrapers as your backdrop. Stroll along the alleyways of Tianzifang in the French Concession, where you'll find charming boutiques and quaint eateries. If you're near People's Square, drop by the Shanghai Museum and see its remarkable collection of Chinese artifacts; admission is free. Art lovers can check out the contemporary exhibitions at Rockbund Art Museum, which charges a small admission fee. As for shopping bargains, don't be put off by the ubiquitous knock-offs and massive crowds at Qipu Lu Clothing Market – great finds await shoppers patient enough to comb through the market stalls. If you're tired from a day of sightseeing and shopping, catch your breath at the beautiful Yu Garden, which has koi ponds and classical Chinese pavilions.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Shanghai

Shanghai's extensive public transport network includes a Metro line, railway and Maglev trains, and a massive public bus system. Although buses are cheaper, the subway is easier to navigate as there are signs and announcements in English. If you plan to take a Maglev train from Pudong International Airport into Shanghai, consider the Maglev & Metro Pass, which provides 24 hours of unlimited subway rides, along with a one-way or round-trip ride on the Shanghai Maglev. A fantastic yet cheap way to cross Huangpu River and get to the Pudong side is to board a ferry from the Jinling Road wharf, located on the southern end of the Bund.
