Top neighbourhoods in Palermo

Centro Storico

Centro Storico's golden-hued streets reveal Palermo's fascinating multicultural past at every turn. The Norman Palace dazzles with Byzantine mosaics in its Palatine Chapel, while medieval churches showcase unique Arab-Norman architecture. Ballarò and Vucciria markets pulse with local life, offering authentic Sicilian street food alongside colourful produce and spices. The area works best on foot, with most treasures within a 10-minute walk of each other through narrow cobblestone streets. Traditional trattorias serve fresh seafood and local specialities, while converted palazzos offer charming boutique accommodation with original frescoes and period details.

Kalsa

Kalsa's storied streets whisper tales of Sicily's layered past, from Arab rule through Norman conquest. Medieval palazzos house incredible art, like the "Annunciation" masterpiece at Palazzo Abatellis. The hauntingly beautiful roofless ruins of Santa Maria dello Spasimo host starlit concerts, while narrow cobblestone lanes lead to hidden courtyards. Traditional trattorias serve authentic Sicilian flavours after 7:30pm in this walkable quarter. Choose from restored palazzo apartments or boutique B&Bs with frescoed ceilings. Most attractions are within easy walking distance, though the uneven medieval streets require sturdy shoes.

Politeama

Politeama blends culture and commerce in Palermo's sophisticated heart. The impressive Teatro Politeama Garibaldi anchors a area filled with elegant 19th-century architecture and designer boutiques. Stroll along tree-lined Via della Libertà to discover Liberty-style palazzos housing upscale shops. The piazzas buzz with well-dressed locals while historic churches offer quiet moments between shopping sprees. Dining options range from refined Sicilian restaurants to trendy wine bars perfect for pre-theater drinks. Boutique hotels in converted historic buildings provide stylish accommodation with business-friendly amenities. The excellent bus connections make exploring the rest of Palermo a breeze, though the area itself is wonderfully walkable.

Castellammare Vucciria

Vucciria Market breathes life into Castellammare Vucciria, where vendors shout across narrow medieval alleys selling fresh seafood, blood oranges, and cannoli. This historic Palermo area lets you step back in time with ancient churches like Santa Maria della Gancia hiding behind weathered baroque facades. Traditional puppet theatres showcase Sicilian marionette artistry in atmospheric spaces that transport you straight into local culture. Walking is your best bet through the honey-colored limestone buildings and cobblestone streets too narrow for cars. Small family-run guesthouses and converted palazzos offer authentic stays with local charm. Traditional trattorias and street food stalls serve up pasta con sarde and arancini that won't break the bank.

Palermo Historical Center

Palermo's Historical Centre dazzles with golden Byzantine mosaics, Arab-Norman architecture, and baroque façades that tell stories spanning centuries. The streets buzz with life as UNESCO treasures like Palatine Chapel and Palermo Cathedral stand watch over bustling markets. Wander through Quattro Canti's crossroads or catch an opera at the neoclassical Teatro Massimo for a cultural feast. Traditional trattorias and street food vendors serve up authentic Sicilian flavours between medieval churches and honey-colored limestone buildings. Most attractions are within a 15-minute walk, though narrow cobblestone streets can be challenging. Historic palazzos converted into boutique hotels offer the perfect home base for exploring this vibrant district.

B&B Hotel Palermo Quattro Canti

B&B Hotel Palermo Quattro Canti

10/10 Excellent
"The B&B is brilliantly located at Quattro Canti, the central crossroads in the heart of Palermo. The close up view from the terrace of several church domes is superb. The property would benefit from even a small amount of upgrading. It is rather utilitarian and reminiscent of student hostel accommodation. In our room, one of the metal legs of the bed had ground a noticeable hole in the linoleum flooring. It degrades the overall impression. There is a lack of management in the terrace restaurant at breakfast. On different days, the umbrellas were not raised, there were no plates, cutlery had run out, the eggs and sausages were stone cold every day etc. Certain food items need replenishing etc. There didn’t seem to be anyone managing the overall guest offering. This is a shame, as the terrace is superb. We would stay again, because if the location and terrace, but would gladly see more efforts to upgrade the property."

10/10 Excellent
"My family stayed at hotel Politeama for a night before heading to the ferry for Morettimo. From the cleanliness of the room, to the amazing breakfast, it was a perfect stay! Great location, friendly staff, and I would like to especially call out the INCREDIBLE Concierge, Dorotea! She went out of her way to ensure that we could change our rental car drop off location and help us get a shuttle to the Ferry. She was always willing to help and went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of and even offered suggestions on where to take my wife for her birthday! We cannot say enough about her and we hope to be able to stay there again in the future!"

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Palermo

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable time to visit Palermo is during January, February, and November, when hotel prices are lower. For a budget-friendly trip that allows you to fully appreciate the city's rich history and culture, a stay of at least 3 to 4 days is recommended. This duration is ideal for exploring significant landmarks such as monuments, cathedrals, churches, and museums, as well as enjoying the cultural scene in local cafes and shops. With lower prices during these months, visitors can experience great value for money while discovering the beauty of Palermo's historical attractions and engaging in sightseeing tours.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: For travellers heading to Palermo, Hotels.com offers DealsOpens in a new window and Last-Minute Deals where you may discover discounted rates on hotels close to your travel date. Additionally, the Smart Shopping feature in the app is a comparison tool that could help you compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you stay updated when rooms become available or prices drop.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate based on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates could help you find a better deal for your stay in a Palermo hotel. For those seeking distinctive experiences, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised touch and potentially better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we may suggest alternative dates that could be more affordable, assisting you in your search for a great rate.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive; however, thanks to Palermo's excellent public transport links, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel further afield that remains well connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
