Great on History, Low on Hospitality

While the properties of the Salem Inn are gorgeous and boast an incredible architectural legacy, I cannot recommend that anyone stay here. The Salem Inn is now using a "contact-less" automated text messaging system that is hopelessly broken and glitched. Upon my arrival in Boston's airport, I had not actually received instructions on where to go or what to do. I called the listed phone number for some clue, and the associate was having another conversation while talking to me. Eventually, we realize that we need to go to the main building. It was pouring down the rain-- and we were greeted with a snarling, "Can I help you?" Her attitude was simply unforgivable throughout the whole process. She did absolutely nothing to make me feel welcome in Salem. Indeed, this was our very first time in New England and she was a dreadful representative. The housekeeping staff did their job, and that was all. They refused to speak to guests, continuing the unwelcome feeling at the Salem Inn. The shining point of the Salem Inn is the staff at the breakfast room. They did provide amazing hospitality and fantastic food. However, even this had problems: the menu was severely limited and you have to reserve breakfast on the broken check in system...? Another plus this hotel has are the actual buildings: the property is bursting with historic authenticity and a great location. Overall, though, the bad points drown the good for the Salem Inn. Search for better options in town.

    Beautiful but uncomfortable.

The room was beautiful, but it smelled like an ashtray and the box spring on the bed was broken. They didn’t have any other rooms available so they temporarily fixed the bed for our stay. It was the most uncomfortable bed I had ever slept in.

    Charming and comfortable Salem experience

The Salem Inn is a very special place! First off, it is a gorgeous historic property with a pretty courtyard and interesting stories to tell. Our room was beautiful, clean and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the comfy bed, the huge windows and lovely, clean bathroom. I love the sweet little birds in the lobby. Every single staff member was amazing. We felt very welcome and taken care of. I can’t wait to stay there again someday!

    Poor breakfast

The breakfast was mediocre and the arrangements for breakfast unnecessarily complex. You had to place a reservation on Open Table no later than 9:30 p.m. the prior evening and then had to be on time within 5 minutes. Each day the breakfast room was nearly empty so social distancing would not explain the regimen. And then, the food was poor. Toaster waffles and instant oatmeal. I could get better waffles at a Holiday Inn Express.

I loved the style of the room! Exposed bricks and beams with white was paint. The bathroom was updated and soothing. The balcony off the bedroom was a very nice touch. Service was outstanding.

We stayed for one night and it was very comfortable. The room was cozy and clean. We had everything we needed. My only complaint was the coffee…it was awful. We would definitely come back.

I cannot say enough great things about the Salem Inn. The staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient. The room was beatiful and clean. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. The one thing I will mention is that parking is limited near the hotel. The hotel does provide a parking pass for street parking and a parking lot in town. This was not a problem for us. We parked on the lot in town, which is about a 7 minute walk from the inn. This could potentially be a challenge for anyone who has difficulty walking. This isn't a complaint, just a heads up for anyone that may be looking for lodging with closer parking. I would definitely stay here again!
