The hostel is very clean and well organized. The instructions for the self check-in were very easy to understand. The hostel is also on a traditional Japanese house, so it was amazing to have this experience!

It's a hostel! Don't expect room service. But it was exactly what we were looking for (cheap room). The added attraction for us was the fact that it is a 125-year-old house. It was great getting to experience sleeping on the floor on futons. As with most hostels, the toilet and bathroom are "down the hall." However, our room had its own private toilet, which was convenient. Check-in was "interesting." There's a box at the front door that has "check-in" instructions for incoming guests. You find the paper with your name, and it tells you how to open the front door, what room you're in, WI-FI info, etc. We arrived late evening and left early morning. As such, we didn't see anybody connected with the facility. It was just like coming and leaving home. A wonderful experience, in my opinion, that well suited our needs and budget.

Nice air conditioned room. Very traditional style. Straightforward check in and check out. The shower area was a bit steamy, and I would have preferred a private bathroom, but you can’t have it all for the experience or value. Very good experience overall.

Cute hostal, and that's all the positive experience we had, the negatives: far from downtown, we experienced quite noisy French neighbours and we reported them, however, nothing was done, the worst is the cleanliness of the hostal. We got bit by bugs many times, beds were really dirty. Won't recommend it at all.

What an interesting traditional japanese house to stay at. A bit hard to find the staff around, and also the bathrooms are not as clean as they look. Still a great experience overall.

The room was clean, but the house was old. There is only 1 restroom and 1 bathroom for 7 bedrooms. People need to wait for their turns to use them. The restroom and bathroom are not as good as other hotels that we used that were about the same prices.
I would expect more from this hotel with the price of $70/night.
The receptionist speaks English well which is a good sign.

Very charming and helpful
Haruya Umekoji is so charming and authentic. Less than 10 minutes walk from the Umekoji station, and right next to the aquarium. The staff was very helpful and they even have bicycles you can rent out for the day (trust me, it’s the better way to get around Kyoto).

It’s great for travelers who are minimalist and enjoy efficiency but not recommend for anyone who needs extra care and more hospitality, or assistance.

i have never had so much space to myself in a hostel/capsule hotel before. the bunk was narrow, but you get so many shelves; a rod, hook, and hangers to hang stuff; and plenty of room for your suitcase(s). this alone made it one of the best stays i've ever booked.
this is a traditional wooden structure, which may not be for everyone but i loved the vibes so much. please respect the tatami flooring and bring socks, or be prepared to go barefoot. i went during a rainy season, so it was mildly humid even inside even with the ac on. also, sound /does/ travel. every creak of floorboard or bedboard, the murmur of outside conversations, etc, were audible. bring earplugs if you think that would bother you.
it's a ~20min walk to the kyoto shinkansen station (doable even with large suitcases as long as you stick to the main roads, which have sidewalks), but there's a closer subway stop ~10min walk away if you have more to carry. the neighbourhood is liberally serviced by multiple bus routes (helpful during your stay!), but the bus system discourages bringing large luggage or large amounts of luggage on board.

Run!!!! The lady was nice in the short interaction we had but then she left right after.
It’s old, very old as advertised but completely lacking maintenance. There are only two bathrooms with no sink so you have to wash your hands in the kitchen.
Two toilets and two showers for 7 people.
Everything is extra, even towels. I was supposed to stay on the ground floor and it’s so noisy when people walk upstairs. Impossible. Now it’s 5:29 pm and I’m leaving to another place, no way I will stay here. There was no one onsite after 4:30 pm.
They refused to refund me also even knowing I didn’t stay there. It’s not about being a shared room, it’s about a torn down hotel that needs urgent renovation!!!
Avoid at all costs

It’s a really charming little place. The walls were thin so please be mindful about noise level. I had some really noisy people that were staying there which was regretful. It could be cleaner because there was mold on the ceiling of the bathroom. Some places were dusty. I stayed on the second floor but luckily my luggage was bearable. The stairs were steep and narrow. I had to be careful to not destroy anything. Overall, I really like it there.

The hostel is quite charming and gives a different experience from big chains hotels and hostels however it feels a little bit weird doing check-in and check-out without talking to anyone from the place.
The check-in starting at 16:00 and check-out at 10:00 gives the impression that you are being rob.
Also, charging for bath towels was unnecessary (at least the first one).

I understand that the building is old, but they should improve the cleanliness of the facility, rooms, and walls. The heated table sheets had food stains everywhere, and the corners of the room were too dusty.
