Downtown Charleston

Charleston's historic city centre enchants visitors with cobblestone streets, pastel Georgian townhouses, and antebellum mansions overlooking the harbour. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop between 18th-century buildings while church spires pierce the sky above tree-lined squares. The Charleston City Market buzzes with vendors selling sweetgrass baskets, and Rainbow Row offers perfect photo ops for architecture lovers. Upscale Lowcountry cuisine dominates the food scene, featuring shrimp and grits in charming historic taverns. Most attractions are within easy walking distance, or hop on the free city centre trolley. Boutique hotels in converted mansions offer Southern hospitality with period furnishings and peaceful courtyards.

French Quarter

Charleston's French Quarter captivates with its pastel-painted historic homes, cobblestone streets, and distinctive architecture. Stroll past Rainbow Row's antebellum mansions, the solemn Old Slave Mart Museum, and St. Philip's Church with its impressive steeple. The Dock Street Theatre and French Huguenot Church anchor this living museum where 18th-century charm meets Southern hospitality. This walkable area offers upscale Southern cuisine featuring she-crab soup and shrimp and grits in charming restaurants. Stay in converted historic homes that now serve as boutique inns with private courtyards. The quarter's narrow streets limit cars, making exploration on foot the perfect way to soak up the authentic Lowcountry atmosphere.

South of Broad

South of Broad showcases Charleston's most exquisite historic treasures along cobblestone streets that whisper stories from centuries past. Rainbow Row's pastel Georgian houses and grand mansions with intricate wrought-iron gates create a living museum of American history. The Battery's oak-shaded promenade offers stunning harbour views while White Point Garden displays historic cannons beneath Spanish moss-draped trees. This elegant area features upscale restaurants serving classic Lowcountry cuisine in converted historic mansions. Boutique bed and breakfasts housed in restored 18th-century homes provide luxurious accommodation with period furnishings. Most visitors explore on foot, as the narrow streets create an intimate atmosphere perfect for leisurely strolls.

West Ashley

West Ashley offers a peaceful retreat from Charleston's bustling historic district. The Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site invites you to explore 664 acres of colonial history through archaeological ruins and a replica ship. Outdoor enthusiasts can wander the West Ashley Greenway or admire America's oldest public gardens at Magnolia Plantation. Chain restaurants and local seafood spots provide budget-friendly dining options throughout this suburban area. Hotels cost significantly less than city centre accommodation, making it ideal for cost-conscious travellers with cars. Shopping centers and wide tree-lined streets give West Ashley its authentic residential charm.

Charleston Historic District

Charleston Historic District dazzles with colourful Rainbow Row townhouses and horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping past grand mansions draped in Spanish moss. The City Market buzzes with local vendors selling sweetgrass baskets while church steeples pierce the skyline. History buffs can explore centuries-old architecture along cobblestone streets lined with massive live oaks. Lowcountry cuisine shines in converted historic buildings where she-crab soup and shrimp and grits rule the menu. Boutique hotels in former mansions offer period furnishings and courtyard gardens. The district is wonderfully walkable with most attractions within a few blocks of each other.

The Ryder Hotel

8/10 Good
"The only reason that I gave this hotel 4 stars instead of 5 is because of our check in experience. We traveled by plane and arrived to the hotel 3 hours before check in time. I asked if it was possible to get an early check in if our room was ready. We were told we could if our room was ready for us. The room was ready, but then she broke the news to us that it’s a hotel policy that we pay $50 for an early check in. I think it’s ridiculous when we are already paying a lot of money to stay at the hotel (we were staying for 3 nights, not just 1). I’ve never had to pay an extra fee for early check in, ever, and we have stayed in a lot of hotels over the past year. The fee is completely unnecessary and it was always in the back of our mind while we stayed there. It seemed like a big old scam that we were being charged extra. The positives - The hotel is in a great location and there are a lot of things within walking distance. The rooms are retro and really cute. The beds were comfortable. We got room service one night and it was really good. Having the outdoor pool at the hotel was wonderful."

"Unbelievably luxurious on every level and the nicest, friendliest, and genuine staff I have ever dealt with. Housekeeping visited twice a day, surprised us with champagne and rose pedals one evening, and we're so professional. Our main Butler, August was amazing. The club level staff from Rita to Dylan and Teresa made every meal and cocktail in the lounge a treat. The pool staff was always so excited to see you and help you pick out the perfect spot to relax in their brand new Salt Water pool. The transportation staff (shoutout Morgan) was supremely helpful and made every venture out to dinner or tours a breeze. I could rack my brain for a negative to this place and I'd die trying. Will be back, and hopefully soon. The Charleston Place was phenomenal from start to finish."

"We loved this hotel, it has a serene quality. Perfectly situated just off King Street, close to historic Rainbow Row, on a corner by a dynamic fountain and a pier, close to restaurants, bars, galleries and shops, it was a quiet, calm and cool retreat from the bustle and heat of Charleston. Our room was spacious and well appointed, the staff; friendly and very helpful. Breakfast on the roof terrace- great views- or where you choose to take it, was pre-ordered and delicious. We loved the little touches the hotel provided: on tap tea & coffee, water stations with various natural flavours ie lemon, mint etc, a late afternoon glass of wine, cheese and nibbles laid out in reception and fresh baked cookies later on in the evening. Most appreciated. Valet parking, which was reasonable in the context of other downtown alternatives, allowed us to dump the car for a couple of days and explore this highly interesting city on foot. A very enjoyable stay which I would happily repeat at the Harbour View Inn."

You can explore beautiful churches, grand cathedrals, engaging tours, impressive architecture, delightful shopping, and dining options, as well as fascinating museums and the renowned university. This duration allows you to appreciate the charm of Charleston while enjoying great value for money.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: For travellers heading to Charleston, exploring the DealsOpens in a new window section on Hotels.com may reveal discounted hotel rates, while the Last-Minute Deals area could offer savings for last-minute getaways. By enabling email alerts or push notifications, you're more likely to see flash sales and special promotions. Additionally, the app’s Smart Shopping tool allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you are informed when rooms become available or prices drop.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate depending on various factors, including the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year. If you're seeking a unique experience, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and may offer better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we may suggest alternative dates that could lead to more affordable options.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually command higher prices, but thanks to Charleston's excellent public transport links, you might find a more affordable independent hotel further out that remains well connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money.
