Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

"The staff was great, really helpful, and friendly. They also helped us book a car to the airport. The hotel was clean and nice and we stayed at the Mets apartments down the road, which are pretty nice and were clean. The Air Conditioning isn't very strong but does work if you leave it on all day. The main thing is that the hotel and apartments are in a great location right next to all the shopping and very near some good restaurants so it's easy to walk everywhere. I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to others if they want to stay right in the city and walk to everything."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bologna

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable time to visit Bologna is during January, February, and August, when hotel prices tend to be lower. For a budget-friendly trip, staying for at least 2 to 3 days is recommended to fully immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and culture. During your visit, you can explore remarkable landmarks, including historical monuments, captivating museums, and splendid churches. Don't miss out on the renowned university, charming cafes, and delightful dining options, all of which provide great value for money. Additionally, the city's vibrant shopping scene and impressive library are must-visit spots for those looking to experience Bologna's cultural offerings.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Hotels.com offers DealsOpens in a new window for Bologna hotels, where you may discover discounted rates on select properties. For travellers seeking spontaneous escapes, the Last-Minute Deals section could reveal opportunities to book a room near your travel date. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app lets you compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you’re more likely to see competitive offers when prices drop or rooms free up. Email alerts and push notifications may also keep you informed of flash sales and special promotions.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates could help you find a more affordable stay in a Bologna hotel. For those in search of distinctive experiences, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and may offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we can suggest alternative dates that might be more economical, assisting you in your search for a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre typically command higher prices, but thanks to Bologna's excellent public transport links, you might find a more affordable independent hotel further afield that remains well connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby cities, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
