A very large spa hotel overlooking a beatiful lake. Excellent breakfast in a dramatic setting. Had a Chinese feel to it due to size and furnishings.

Over priced due to a festival
Well, hospitality wasn't like any other Japanese hotel (which is very very high level) and I had some weird white bugs/mold coming from the wooden wall
I paid a lot for this as there was a festival in the town. I would recommend trying to find another place

Comfortable beds, good location
Hotel Akankoso is located on the shores of Lake Akan in a small town. At first the hotel seems a little shabby with stained carpet and furniture. But the room was clean and comfortable, and there were many little extras that made it a great place to stay. The staff was friendly, there was free soft serve and coffee in the lobby and the onsen (hot spring pool) was free. There were robes (like kimono), hot and cold water, good wifi and comfortable beds in the rooms. My room was spacious with a tiny bathroom containing a deep tub. The location of the hotel is next to the boat dock and 15 minutes walk to the Ainu village. The hotel has a restaurant which you must pre-book, but there are restaurants in the town nearby. The hotel allows smoking so the rooms do smell a bit, but we got one that was acceptable. The public onsen is free but there are also two private ones that you can reserve for a fee. Just be aware that there is a hefty onsen tax added to the room charge, whether or not you use the onsen. When we checked out, we were given a melon bread each - nice for breakfast.

Excellent location and pretty environment
I stayed in this hotel with three friends in a 4-person room. The room was quite large, and we had enough space to pack our luggage. The room was pretty, and some areas were the traditional Japanese style.
Also, there was an indoor hot spring on the top of the hotel (forgot the exact floor), and it still opened at midnight. No matter when you checked-in or came back to the hotel, you could have the chance to enjoy the hot spring. The environment was acceptable, and the facilities were well prepared.
For the location, this hotel was just next to the Lake Akan, and you don't need to walk for a long way. It was the highlight of this hotel.

Staff were very polite and patience, though their English Speaking were not generally good. Set dinner in hotel was excellent. I would definitely rebook the hotel the next time I visit the area.

Terrible experience
We book a room it Kushiro. Turns out motel is 78km (1.5 hours) from Kushiro
We called motel and they hung up
We had a Japanese man on train call them but they didn't want to discuss with him
We emailed motel with no reply
It's a total scam

Convenient and affordable, just off the main strip
Room was spacious and the hotel was fairly well appointed, if a little dated. The only issue was that the bathroom looked clean, but didn't smell clean. I should have asked them to clean it, but we were only there for one night.

Dated tired hotel with limited + unhelpful staff.
The staff was reasonably friendly when we checked in. However, we made the mistake of leaving the side of the window without insect screen opened when we went out for dinner. The room was invaded by bugs when we got back. The staff refused to help rid the room of bugs and only provided an insecticide spray when asked. They also refused our request to change room and basically told us we had to debug the room ourselves. We ended up spending the better part of an hour spraying and clearing dead bugs.
