Historic Kailua Village

Historic Kailua Village serves up a delicious slice of Hawaiian royal history along Kailua Bay's turquoise waters. Stroll the oceanfront Alii Drive to discover cultural treasures like Hulihee Palace and the ancient coral stone walls of Mokuaikaua Church. Snorkellers splash in the calm, clear bay while shoppers hunt for treasures at the Kona Farmers Market and local artisan galleries. Waterfront restaurants dish up everything from casual plate lunches to upscale Pacific Rim fusion as the sun dips into the ocean. Most attractions sit within easy walking distance along flat Alii Drive. While public transit is limited, rental cars give you freedom to explore beyond this charming historic district.

Kahaluu-Keauhou

Snorkel with rainbow-colored fish at Kahaluu Beach Park or discover ancient Hawaiian history at sacred Keauhou Bay, where King Kamehameha III was born. The striking black lava coastline features remarkable archaeological sites including heiau temples and the Keauhou Holua Slide, an impressive ancient sledding course carved into volcanic rock. Resort restaurants serve fresh seafood while beachside food trucks offer tasty local plate lunches. Most visitors stay in oceanfront resorts or condo rentals that blend naturally with the lava rock landscape. A hire car is essential for exploring beyond the resort areas.

Holualoa Village

This artsy mountain village feels like stepping back in time, with century-old wooden shopfronts housing galleries along a single high street. Local artists display koa wood sculptures and vibrant island paintings in family-run studios. Nearby coffee farms cascade down volcanic slopes, offering tours that reveal the bean-to-cup process and complimentary tastings. Most galleries and cafes close by 4 PM, so plan morning visits for the best experience. Holiday rentals and B&Bs in converted plantation homes make for charming stays. A hire car is essential for exploring the winding roads and reaching beaches just 15 minutes downhill in Kailua-Kona.

Kahaluu Bay

Kahaluu Bay offers world-class snorkelling in crystal-clear waters just steps from the sand. Tropical fish dart through the protected reef while the historic Kuemanu Heiau temple ruins provide cultural context above the shore. The "Little Blue Church" creates a perfect photo opportunity against dramatic black lava rock formations. Pack water shoes and reef-safe sun cream for a day exploring underwater wonders. Holiday rentals and condos with ocean views make up most accommodation in this laid-back area. Though dining options are limited at the bay itself, nearby Kailua-Kona offers plenty of Hawaiian-fusion restaurants just a short drive away. Arrive early or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds.

Kona Islander Vacation Club

Kona Islander Vacation Club

10/10 Excellent
"We’ve been staying at Kona Islander since 2008 and have stayed in several different units over the years. We keep coming back because we love the location and atmosphere, and the staff during this visit were absolutely wonderful, friendly, welcoming, and helpful. We had a great stay overall. Our main disappointment with this particular unit was that it did not have a hot plate or small stovetop. One of the reasons we choose Kona Islander instead of a traditional hotel is the ability to prepare meals during longer stays. We stayed for 10 days and went to Costco planning to make many of our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners in the room, but with only a microwave, we couldn’t do that as planned. This unit also had only a small refrigerator, while other units we’ve stayed in at the property had a full-size refrigerator and freezer. That was less important to us, but worth mentioning. We would absolutely stay at Kona Islander again. We just hope the owner considers adding a hot plate or small stovetop to this unit. That one addition would have made an otherwise wonderful stay even better."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Kailua-Kona

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable time to visit Kailua-Kona is during May, September, and November, when hotel prices tend to be lower. For those looking to explore the essential landmarks, cultural sites, and natural wonders of the area, a stay of at least 4 to 5 days is highly recommended. This budget-friendly timeframe allows visitors to enjoy activities such as snorkelling, swimming, and shopping while taking in the stunning sunsets, beautiful beaches, and majestic volcanoes. Dining on local coffee and cuisine further enhances the experience, making it great value for money.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Hotels.com offers a variety of hotel deals to Kailua-Kona. You may discover discounted rates by checking the DealsOpens in a new window section or find unexpected offers in the Last-Minute Deals area. By enabling email alerts or push notifications, you're more likely to be informed of flash sales and special promotions. The Smart Shopping tool, a comparison tool available via the app, allows travellers to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you’re promptly notified when availability increases or prices drop for your preferred hotels.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so having some flexibility with your travel dates may help you find a better deal for your stay in a Kailua-Kona hotel. For those seeking distinctive accommodations, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised experience and potentially greater value. When you book through Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we will suggest alternative dates that might be more affordable, assisting you in your search for a more favourable option.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre generally tend to be more expensive, but with Kailua-Kona's superb public transport links, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel situated further out that remains well-connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
