Find out more about Guangzhou

Guangzhou was once called the Canton and is the capital city of Southern China's Guangdong Province. This city has for several decades played a strategic role as the nation's port, at present time, the city has transformed into a bustling metropolitan area that houses 16.6 million people , the largest urban ancestral home within the Chinese diaspora.

You would hear locals describe Guangzhou as one of the top three mainland's biggest city. In Shanghai you celebrate bling and in Beijing power and influence, but in Guangzhou, we celebrate the quality of life, character and less ostentatious wealth among cities, very much unlike other capitals.

Where to go in Guangzhou

Living up to its name, the Flower City is every bit green, buffeted by trees in every street with ivy decorating its pedestrian walkways, get ready to see one or two colourful trees and blossoming flower beds in the most unexpected places, along canals and side streets sometimes.

Shamian Island: Shamian Island is an integral part of the city's history towards the tail end of the 18th century. Foreign traders resided in this region and their influence is still notable till this very day, which can be seen from multiple French Catholic Churches and a handful of stone Western-style mansions on the island. There are a handful of coffee shops, restaurants and hotels all around the area.

Visit the Wet Market and the Medicine Market: when there is a wet market, you could typically find a medicine market nearby, both markets are in close proximity to each other, you would need to visit them to experience the daily life of Guangzhou. Buy meat, poultry, traditional fruit and vegetables, live eels, turtles, baby scorpions and many more 'wet items' at the wet market, get ready to be greeted by slightly unpleasant smell here and there but it's a sure memorable experience for every visitor. At Qingping Market (the medicine market), you can buy all sorts of weird herbal medicine concoction ingredients like red dates, snakeskins, locusts, dried mandarin peel and even dried seahorses.

The Canton Tower: The Canton Tower was constructed in 2009, the 595.7-metre observation tower was for a time the tallest building in the world before the Burj Khalifa was built in Dubai, the tower changes colour in the dark and can be seen all around the city. Get to the top to enjoy a beautiful view of Guangzhou, then enjoy a buffet from the rotating restaurant and send a letter from the highest pox box the world has from the kitsch post box.
