Top neighborhoods in York

Bootham

Bootham's medieval stone walls and Georgian townhouses lead you straight to York Minster's soaring Gothic spires. This charming neighborhood balances history and everyday life with impressive attractions at your fingertips. Wander through the Yorkshire Museum Gardens to discover ancient ruins among blooming flowers, or spend an afternoon appreciating centuries of art at York Art Gallery. Traditional British pubs serve hearty Yorkshire puddings alongside local ales, while cozy cafes offer perfect spots for people-watching. Most city center sights are just a 10-minute walk away, with regular buses connecting to the railway station. B&Bs in converted Georgian townhouses provide authentic accommodation with plenty of historic character.

Clifton

Clifton gives you a taste of real British life without the tourist trappings. Tree-lined streets wind past handsome Victorian houses where actual locals go about their day. Homestead Park offers peaceful green spaces for afternoon strolls, while riverside paths along the Ouse make for perfect morning walks. York's city center attractions sit just a 20-minute walk away. A handful of charming pubs and cafes serve up traditional British fare for lunch and early dinners. Accommodations consist mostly of family-run B&Bs in converted Victorian homes where hosts serve hearty English breakfasts. The neighborhood quiets down after dark, perfect for travelers seeking authentic suburban tranquility.

Fishergate

Fishergate blends medieval charm with convenient urban access in the heart of York. Wander past well-preserved historic architecture before exploring the grand York Castle Museum or climbing Clifford's Tower for panoramic city views. History buffs will appreciate the ancient city walls, while culture seekers can catch performances at York Barbican. The neighborhood sits within easy walking distance of York's main attractions, with York Railway Station providing excellent connections across the UK. Traditional British pubs and casual cafes cluster around the station, offering hearty Yorkshire fare after a day of sightseeing. Most accommodations are budget to mid-range hotels and B&Bs in converted Victorian buildings.

City Centre

York City Centre wraps you in 2,000 years of history with medieval streets that feel like time travel without the jetlag. The magnificent York Minster towers over timber-framed shops along the Shambles where buildings lean in as if sharing secrets. Wander the ancient city walls, dive into Viking history at Jorvik Centre, or lose yourself in York Castle Museum's recreation of Victorian streets. Food options range from traditional pubs serving Yorkshire pudding to charming tea rooms with fresh scones. The neighborhood is best explored on foot through its pedestrian-only zones. Most attractions sit within a 10-minute walk, making this walkable wonderland perfect for history lovers who want their accommodation with a side of time travel.

South Bank

South Bank offers a peaceful retreat across the River Ouse from York's bustling center. Rowntree Park's memorial gardens and lake provide a green escape perfect for afternoon picnics. The New Walk's tree-lined promenade delivers stunning views of York's historic skyline and the majestic Minster towers across the water. Riverside paths invite leisurely strolls where the only sounds are church bells and gentle river currents. Red-brick Victorian terraces and family-run B&Bs create a genuine neighborhood feel far from tourist crowds. Traditional pubs serve hearty Yorkshire fare alongside locals who appreciate visitors who embrace the area's unhurried rhythm. The city center is just a 10-minute walk via pedestrian bridge, making South Bank the perfect balance of accessibility and tranquility.

The Milner York

The Milner York

8/10 Good
"We stayed in a junior suite, and it overlooked the front garden area. It was a large, comfortable room with everything you could need for an overnight stay in York. I would request to stay away from the staircases as there are guest bathrooms for the function rooms, and you can hear everything, which was not great when trying to sleep. The TV was smart and displayed all channels and apps. You could order room service, and the staff was prompt and very polite. Medium-grade breakfast with English and continental options, great value for money - option for breakfast in the room on weekends for £5 extra. About a 10 min walk into the city and close to the train station. On-site parking for £22 pounds a day. Overall, it was great stay and I would recommend it to others. "

"The room is outdated, grubby carpet, creaky floors, you can hear everyone walking above and below you. The noise outside keeps everyone from sleeping. No double glazing. The toilet didnt flush, you had to wait for water to fill up - which took ages. The location was good and so was the water pressure in the shower. That was it!"

"The hotel experience was good with a wonderful breakfast. The only downside for us were the Bar prices which were exorbitant beyond belief. We were a party of 4 and decided to have a nightcap one evening and drank for 1 hour. The bill was beyond belief. Be warned These prices resemble those in Dubai. "

Radisson Hotel York

10/10 Excellent
"Rooms were nice and big, I had a fab view across the water. Little dated and could do with a minor revamp, but that’s fine. Staff were nice in the hotel. Breakfast was very nice and good for the price (although dining room was a bit difficult to find) Service was slow in the bar area for evening meal, didn’t feel overly welcoming. Food was nice but they made a mistake with a nut allergy that I declared. This was handled really well by the manager - he was apologetic, handled it with the kitchen staff, and replaced & comped our meal. I was absolutely fine and I’m pleased with how it was managed in the end, but more attention needs to be given in the kitchen to stuff like this. Location was good, easy for us to walk to and from to get to everywhere we wanted to in York. "

"Excellent stay from start to finish. Easy and smooth check in with good communication beforehand regarding my specific needs due to disability. Room was super, well laid out and spacious. Bathroom was modern and designed for disabled use. We ate in the on site restaurant 2 nights out of 3 during our stay. Food was really exceptional given it’s a chain hotel. The seabass I had the first evening was really flavourful and the couscous and roasted veg with it was the perfect combination to go with it. I had the crab ravioli the second evening and that was just amazing. Breakfast was buffet style with a wide range of pastries, bread, cereals, fresh fruits and juice in addition to everything you could possibly want in the hot selections. I used the spa facilities both days enjoying a pedicure and a body massage. The massage left me floating and I would highly recommend them. My only gripe would be the treatment rooms are very small and really doesn’t give you much room for manoeuvre! Don’t let that detract you from the treatments on offer though and the therapists are extremely friendly and good at what they do. All in all I have no hesitation in recommending a stay here and we will certainly return, hopefully sooner rather than later. Thank you again for a wonderful stay. "
