What to do in Dongdaemun

Dongdaemun Hotels

Dongdaemun is one of the most diverse and deeply fascinating districts of South Korea’s vast capital city of Seoul. The area is home to Dongdaemun Market, a huge, century-old traditional shopping sprawl composed of chic boutiques, glitzy mini malls, and hundreds of rustic stalls. Dongdaemun is also a great area for culture and history buffs, providing plenty of heritage sites mixed with cutting-edge contemporary architecture.

Things to see

Start you electrifying Dongdaemun morning by experiencing a slice of old-world city history at the Seoul Fortress Wall. Starting in Dongdaemun, this immense stone structure - composed of thousands of looming grey bricks - winds around the city, marking the 14th century city limits of the Joseon Dynasty. Of course, not all of the Fortress Wall still survives, but in Dongdaemun it remains in supreme condition. After, culture-fiends should head to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, an enormous sleek-silver half-dome shaped building covered in glittering panels. This stellar example of contemporary architecture - based in the green-washed Dongdaemun Culture and History Park - is home to a design museum, exhibition space, and performance areas. In the afternoon, spend a few hours searching through the rich and wonderful variety of stores in the Dongdaemun Market. Bargain-hunters can adventure through the maze-like streets, finding bright fabrics, hip vintage clothing, flashy electronics, and mouthwatering street food.
