Things to see in Shimogyo

Sanjusangendo is one of the most stunning attractions in all of Kyoto. This temple is Japan’s longest wooden structure (400 feet in length), and dates from the 13th century. The most impressive aspect is the 1,001 statues of Kannon, also known as the Goddess of Mercy. Shimogyo is also home to the Nishi Honganji temple, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It tends to be less crowded than many other temples in Kyoto, so you’re guaranteed to find tranquility among the beautiful wooden buildings and serene gardens. There are also some great museums to visit in the neighborhood, including the Ryukoku Museum. Through various exhibitions it provides a comprehensive look at Buddhism, covering its origins in India, journey to Asia, and subsequent development in Japan. Sagano, a bamboo forest in the middle of the city, is well worth a visit and is a great place for a relaxing walk (but try to go early to avoid the crowds).

Good for couples

It has an abundance of beautiful temples and gardens that are perfect for a romantic walk, allowing you to find a sense of peace and tranquility together. The huge choice means you can always find somewhere a bit less crowded for a more romantic experience, like Malebranche JR Kyoto Isetan Salon (which serves authentic Japanese cuisine). There are also ample shopping opportunities for couples, with areas such as Shijō Street and Kyoto Station among the best in the area.
