Find out more about Jung-gu

Jung-Gu Hotels

Translating as ‘Central district’, there’s no doubting Jung-gu’s prime position in Seoul. It seamlessly fuses history and modernity, perhaps best summed up in the City Hall, where a staid, stone building stands juxtaposed against a sleek glass curve. Gangnam may be better known for high-flying lifestyles and Jongno for the royal palaces, but Jung-gu has a bit of everything, from the hip, urban core of Myeongdong to thronging markets – and there’s a mountain right in the middle of it all.

Things to see

You can’t really miss N Seoul Tower, a soaring observatory tower which stands high above the city, atop Namsan Mountain. Ride the cable car to the top, gazing a Seoul comes into vertiginous focus, and if you have a head for heights, you can even dine in the revolving observatory restaurant. Once back on ground level, why not indulge in some retail therapy in this shopping-mad city? The options are endless, but in the centre, Myeongdong is a shopaholic’s paradise, from hyper-modern malls like Lotte Department Store, which throngs with trendy, young Seoulites, to Namdaemun Market, which assaults the senses with its dazzling textiles and sizzling food stalls. For a real taste of tradition, visit Namsangol Hanok Village, a collection of houses from the Joseon Era. These elegant, wooden hanoks could be straight out of a fairytale, and offer an insight into the life of the nobility in medieval Seoul.

Hotels in Jung-Gu

Competing with Gangnam in the luxury stakes, the 5-star hotels in Jung-gu are housed in glitzy skyscrapers, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide unrivalled views of the cityscape. The spacious suites here are filled with lavish furnishings, premium bedding, and extras like jetted bathtubs and minibars. Between the spa treatments, events management, and dedicated concierge services, your every whim will be catered for. There are also numerous cheap hotels in Jung-gu, particularly contemporary guesthouses and hostels, offering streamlined, minimalist accommodation. Free WiFi and flat-screen TVs among the mod cons provided, and there’s usually a free continental breakfast or the facilities to self-cater.

Where to stay

The luxury Jung-gu hotels are mostly clustered around the City Hall, in the northwest of the district. Staying here, you’ll be spoiled with cultural sights, plus the mega shopping districts of Myeongong are on the doorstep. Further into Myeongdong, there are numerous budget hotels and hostels aimed at savvy backpackers and young travellers. You’ll be at the heart of Jung-gu, where neon lights dazzle and crowds buzz. There’s also a mixture of high-end and budget hotels surrounding Namsan Park, ranging from tiny guesthouses to vast hotel complexes, and this area offers the perfect blend of urban thrills and natural beauty.

How to get to Jung-Gu

Thanks to Seoul’s exceptional transport system, it’s a breeze to get to Jung-gu. It’s the hub of the city’s train and metro lines, with Seoul Station at its western edge. Express trains from the main airport, Incheon International, take just over 40 minutes to whiz to this station, and from there, the metro system will shuttle you around Jung-gu and beyond. Myeongdong is 2 stops away on line 4, while the City Hall is just a couple of minutes away on line 1, and the central area is easily walkable. Some of the luxury hotels can arrange private airport transfers.
