About this cottage

Our housekeeping activities entail an enhanced disinfection cleaning protocol due to COVID-19. The Virginia County Cottage at the Black Twig Garden is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail and Route #76 Biking Trail. Located in the East Coast Mountain Biking Capital Corridor of the Blue Ridge Mountains it is nestled on a 30 acre farm with access from the Town of Troutville, a designated Appalachian Trail Community. Easily accessible via I81, one mile from Exit 150B close to shopping and restaurants.
This 1940 farm house has been fully restored with all modern conveniences and outfitted with fine furniture. The Appalachian Trail is just a short walk from the cottage where a spectacular high meadow awaits with panoramic mountain views. The farm is enclosed by actively managed forestry sporting much wildlife including hives of honeybees. The orchard entails many heritage apple and pear trees. The Black Twig Garden is a ¼ acre enclosed organic working square foot garden for growing a variety of vegetables, berries, flowers, and home to our pet farm chickens.

Local activities include hiking, biking, birding, fabulous dining, wineries, craft breweries, Greenfield Sports Center, Attic Productions, and historical sites within short driving distances. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the James River and boating on Claytor Lake are the preferred watersports. Hollins University, Roanoke College, Virginia Tech, and Radford University are easily reached via I81.

The Cottage has one formal Monticello inspired Chippendale porch and one casual porch outfitted with a gas grill. Campfire opportunities can be made available on top of the orchard overlooking the property. The first floor entails the Queen Size Bedroom with double sized closets, Full Bath with walk in shower, Dining Room, Kitchen with Nook, Living Room, Laundry room, and Den with game table/writing desk. The upstairs has a large King Size Bedroom with a walk in closet, a Twin Sized Bedroom with two beds, and another Full Bath with a skylight. Bedrooms are dressed with fine linens and resemble more traditional bed and breakfast venues.

    Perfect family getaway

The property and our experience with hosts Sybille and Mark fully lived up to all of the other wonderful reviews. We (a couple with two teenagers, two dogs, and a 90+ yo grandma) were looking for a scenic and safe place to spend a couple of days. We especially enjoy hiking, birding, and star-watching, and were not disappointed - we could do all of that without having to drive anywhere! While it turned out that Grandma was not able to join us, the house was very well suited for someone who might have difficulties navigating stairs or maneuvering around - the first floor bedroom and bathroom and easy access to both porches were perfect in that regard. Plus, the numerous COVID precautions taken at this property made us feel very comfortable. Everything was just so nice - thoughtful and informative communications from the hosts, lovely linens, super-clean newly updated bathrooms, perfectly outfitted kitchen (the first we have stayed at that actually had a working wine opener!) and special treats (delicious bagels! fresh eggs! and supply of excellent quality coffee!) made it a wonderful stay. Our two days went by much too quickly. We would love to come back. Thank you, Sybille and Mark!

    This cottage will spoil you

My wife and I have stayed at quite a few rental houses over the years. This cottage was one of the best, if not the best, we have visited. Sybille and Mark have gone above the normal regarding all the small details that soon add up (fresh eggs in the refrig, fresh bagels and cream cheese, assorted chocolates around the house, various entertainment options, well stocked kitchen, fire pit,and it goes on). Being that we stayed on Christmas, having a lit and decorated Christmas tree was even more special. If you are tired of staying at hotels, you should treat yourself to this place as you won't regret it.

    Beautiful, comfortable, mountain farm home

This home, surrounded by nature, created a happy atmosphere for our long weekend stay. We appreciated the porches where we could bird watch even when it rained one morning. All around the property were neat surprises and the Black Twig garden was especially impressive to me as I also grow an organic garden. The house was very cozy and comfortable. Sybille and Mark were wonderful hosts. The surprise treats were a big hit and we enjoyed the provided board games too. It was fun to explore the area and do some hiking and biking in this beautiful part of Virginia.

    Great find!

You will not be disappointed with this property! So well appointed and just perfect! Sybille and Mark haven’t forgotten a thing! They are just delightful hosts! We enjoyed a girlfriend getaway, but I would return with my husband, or just alone for some quiet time.

    Awesome cottage

We have been using VBRO for over 10 years and this is one of our favorites. The cottage was very clean and well stocked with everything you would need. The bed was very comfortable and Sybille and Mark were very gracious hosts and were very welcoming. There are many great hikes in the area including the Appalachian Trail next to the property. We highly recommend renting this property you will not be disappointed.

    Relaxing race weekend

Our family (3 couples) was in town for the footlevelers half marathon. We had a wonderful visit at this cozy, private and exceptionally well equipped home. Our hosts were very gracious and made sure we had what we needed but also made sure we had our privacy. We rent often and have never stayed anywhere that had as many amenities. The owners truly anticipated every need. We would absolutely stay here again.
