Cleanliness issue after long closure; poor wifi
Beautiful seafronting setting. Dedicated pontoon jetty for easy arrival. Granted early checkin which was nice. Wifi was terrible and barely useable. Main issue: cleanliness. There were dead bugs and roaches in the bathroom which could have easily been hosed away before handing over the room to guests. More importantly, there seemed to be minor bed bugs from the mattress. My partner and I both had uncomfortable bites. We are still nursing the itches currently at home with cream/ointment. Pretty disappointing from an otherwise pleasant stay at The Barat. Hope the management can have a look (our room num was 322).

We stayed in the 4 bed dorm room with attached bathroom and toilet, which is really nice to have. The room however, gets quite cramp when there’re 4 bags in it, and there isn’t enough table space for things. Nevertheless, we like the tidy grounds and quality food at the restaurant.

Oasis in the sea
The Perhentian islands are an oasis in the sea about a 30 to 45 minute high speed boat ride from Besut off the north east coast of Malaysia. Well worth the effort to get there because it is truly a little paradise. Beautiful sand and seawater that is as blue and green and fresh and salty as you would expect of heaven. It’s not for everyone, those with a wanderlust and experienced travellers will definitely be rewarded. The Barat Resort itself is basic but very functional and well managed.

The Barat @ Perhentian
The dorm room had thin walls, so you can hear the rooms beside you. The shower was just about acceptable. We left our luggage in the locker, however this was not locked and controlled hence anyone can enter at will. However a convenient stay for accessing coral view beach, a very good snorkelling site.
