Great stay.
For the price we paid ($120/night for 3) we were extremely happy with Dozen Ryokan. Service was superb. Very friendly staffs. Clean and comfy. No waiting time or issue with the shared bathrooms. I would stay here again if I visit Kyoto again and recommend it to my friends and family.

Good basic place for the money
It was good overall, and I would stay there again, but when we got there the place felt kind of messy and the receptionist was not consistent on the information. But after than, things were smooth and good. We didn't get our room cleaned in the 4 nights that we stayed over, but we are normally pretty clean, so it didn't matter much to us. The room was spacious and the futons great. The breakfast was basic, but good options for what you pay. This Ryokan is close to the train station and to other main attractions. I would stay there again!

Cute little ryokan
Pros: great deal; very traditional ryokan feel; beautiful decor and character; friendly/helpful staff; quiet/residential neighborhood: spacious room with fridge and hair dryer; free breakfast with cereal, salad, fruit, bread; etc. Cons: privacy was a bit of an issue—toilet and shower stalls empty into the hallways and sinks are actually in the hallways, which can be a bit awkward; location is great for access to Kyoto station, but it's a 30+ min walk to most restaurants and sights/temples/shrines

The BEST place to stay in Kyoto!
Positively the best place we stayed in our month long visit to Japan, Dozen Ryokan offered the perfect blend of tradition and convenience on a budget. When we return to Kyoto, we will 100% stay here the entire time. Anyone who is fond of Japanese history or tradition will love their stay here. The rooms, all of which are named and decorated to match that theme, are splendidly comfortable. Featuring tatami floors, heated floor mats for the winter and a posh rug to lay the foam pads and futons over, sleeping here offered a very comfortable nights sleep. Sliding doors, woodwork shelves and ceilings lent themselves well to the historic atmosphere. Our first room (we added a night and got a new room), "Samurai", had a lovely view of the garden and glass windows hidden behind shoji screen windows. The weather was cool, so we opened the glass windows and kept the shoji paper ones closed which let in just the right amount of chill to keep the room comfortable. Thanks to keeping the windows open, we got to hear the morning gong from the nearby temple, and it was sublime. The showers and bathrooms are great, though shared, and slippers are provided at the front desk. The location was perfect. We were walking distance from a lot of the major attractions and close to a Family Mart (24hr convenience store). For visiting further places, we were close to the bus stop and Kyoto station, and the front desk even hailed a cab for us when it was raining. The breakfast offered good variety too!

Basic but comfortable
Although quite basic, the accommodation was very good for the price and nice to experience some authentic Japanese style. The staff there helped us organise an on sen experience in Kyoto which was very helpful. It was a bit of a walk (20 mins) to the main eating area.
