Well Needed Place of Relaxation
Kalani is beautiful. Reception is a bit relaxed and the contemporary Buddhist mentality and peaceful nature of the ʻāina is present there. If you have a fear of bugs this place may not be ideal as it is very tropical.Everything was lovely.

Utopia
Initially the room looked clean hundreds and hundreds of bug/beetle crept out of every corner of the room at night. The bugs were flying around getting into my bags, clothes, shoes, landing on my body as well as causing painful sores. Room service was requested multiple times and eventually I was offered to move rooms. After the bug incident, I'm not sure if their staff is just not paying attention during work but they charged me $100 more to switch rooms after I had paid $89.95 for the accommodation via. expedia. They insisted on paying a $50 membership fee which was asked to donate every single time my card was run. The retreat center would allow random visitors off the street to visit and use accommodations.I would have preferred more strict method for outside guests. Excellent food, grounds, massage therapy, and yoga were great. The yoga classes were the best I have ever taken although I was charged an extra $5.00 fee for every class when outsiders could take the classes for $10 and not necessarily residents of Hawaii.

Peaceful place, wish we could stay longer
This is a retreat centre that also has accommodation options for non-retreat guests. The feeling at the resort is very relaxing, and was a great place to stay. We are both vegetarian, and were there for christmas for a couple of amazing buffet dinners. The breakfasts were also good. Maybe not great value, but great tasting. We had a car, so getting around was easy, but without a car it would be a different story as there didn't appear to be much public transport in the area. The wifi in the room was sufficiently fast for us to Skype on christmas, but it did have a few connection problems. The pool area is clothing optional, which goes with the rest of the resort in that it provided a sense of freedom. The ocean in front of the resort is beautiful, but consists of cliffs. There is a swimming beach a few kilometres down the road, also clothing optional. The waves here were a little rough on the day that we tried it out. The room was pricey, but the atmosphere was great. It was cheaper (per night) if staying for a week, but still not cheap. The room had fans, but no air conditioners. I am still puzzled about the bird song in the evening, and think it was pre-recorded and played through speakers; presumably to provide background sound with everyone sleeping with open windows. Earplugs were provided with the room, but we didn't need to use them.
