Profile: Hyde Park

Profile: Hyde Park

Hyde Park lies in the heart of Sydney’s business district, with the stately St Mary’s Cathedral at its northern end and the moving Anzac Memorial, constructed in honor of Australia’s WWI troops, to the south. Multiple events are celebrated in the park all year round, including the Food and Wine Fair, Sydney Festival, and Australia Day.

In warmer months, Hyde Park is a favorite spot for sport or an afternoon picnic in the shade of its giant trees. Just outside the park gates, there’s a myriad of trendy bars and restaurants, as well as cosmopolitan Pitt Street Mall for shoppers.

The location is very good! I can walk to the rest of the city easily. I like it that it’s not in the busy part, so when I booked transport for airport, there was no issue in the car waiting outside as I loaded my luggages. The room itself is very clean and comfortable. While mine was using the shared bathroom, it was actually clean most of the time while I was using it. For the price paid, no complaints!

Good value for location, good facilities

Having had a couple of different stays in the last 2 weeks I can say I was pretty happy with the place. It's close to Hyde Park and Oxford St where there is a fabulous IGA and many other food shops. There are 2 efficient lifts and the rooms (which vary in size) are clean and with professionally laundered sheets and towels. ATM card operated laundries are on 2 of the floors. The breakfast pack is really more of a snack pack -if you don't fancy eating choc mud muffins at 8am, you might like to save these for later and organise an alternative breakfast! The prices are very low due to Covid of course. I won't deny I had a massive issue with one member of staff on reception, but feel this is being sorted. I like how the sliding doors only open about 10cm. It means you can go out and leave your sliding door open and let the gusty Sydney winds blow fresh air in.

A few more words from Catherine Merrick

I always think it's bullying of hotels to include a person's last name in their response. It's totally unnecessary and is just an act to try to deter the guest from writing negative reviews. It has the opposite effect on me - I just want to write more! Having such a hostile reception staff member as I described in my last review is at odds with the mission of YWCA NSW. I have looked at Google reviews for this hotel and seen complaints that go back a couple of years and seem to refer to this member of staff. Yes, it's a place where poorer people stay. I have seen homeless literally walk off the street with no possessions and check in. But EVERYBODY deserves to be treated with respect. Catherine Merrick.

Worst experience with one reception staff - ever!

I had the most terrible experience with a young man working here behind the desk. When I arrived he actually started yelling at me when I went to replace a mask (I was nowhere near him). If you approached the reception at any time he would stare at you robotically and not give any verbal acknowledgement of you, getting what you asked for eg a breakfast pack with a hostile vibe. The icing on the cake came when I left my room so the cleaners could do a clean. I got something to eat and drink at the IGA and sat in reception to consume it to keep out of the cleaners way. I saw him take my photo (without permission) and then began ranting for me to put my mask on. I was sitting far away from him and NSW law permits people to eat and drink without a mask. He then got on the phone and started ranting to someone. In fact he was still going when I finished my snack and returned to my room! Can I say the other reception staff, a young lady and another young man are great - friendly and helpful and the cleaners were lovely. I do not want the other reception staff to get into trouble for this hostile, abrupt person, so I will say that for the course of my stay he worked mornings. I am a Gold Hotels.com member and have never experienced anything like this! I am a paying customer! Totally shocked...
