good location and excellent service
the room was pretty spacious for 2 and the staff were all very helpful. the hotel was also near many tourist attractions and the main shopping street. there are 3 buses that stop outside the hotel from Kyoto station. One little thing though. One of the nightgowns provided had a bit of a stain on it the first night which looked like dried blood. that was quite worrisome.

Great base for exploring Kyoto
Sunroute was a well-located hotel for our first two nights in Kyoto (we moved to a ryokan after this to experience something more traditional). We were able to access several sights on foot, and trains were not too far to reach when going further afield. Likewise, taxis are easy enough to get from the main road, provided it's not peak hours for the working crowd. The room was considerably spacious for Japan, and the bed was very comfortable after a long day of walking around and exploring the city. The bathroom was compact, as is to be expected, and perhaps in need of a refitting, as there was a mild odor that was present upon opening the door, but quickly dissipated upon entering. (Perhaps it is the ventilation system or drainage?) It wasn't bad enough for us to request a move (we had already started unpacking when we noticed it), but it's worth checking before you open your luggage, so that you can change rooms if necessary without much fuss. Other than that, the hotel was great. Staff were pleasant and helpful and the breakfast was a great way to start your day before heading out. Walking along the river, into Gion or towards the various temples, was always enjoyable and in spite of some very heavy rain, we still managed to see a lot during our stay. I recommend getting out to the likes of Fushima Inari Taisha very early in the morning and getting back to the hotel in time for breakfast before it ends - see the sights without the crowds!

Great hotel near Downtown Kyoto!
This hotel was in a pretty good location, about a 10 minute walk to Downtown Kyoto & Gion which has endless amounts of restaurants & shopping. There was also an excellent coffee shop right across the road, and a convenience store a few buildings down which was great. The room itself was very small, however it probably met the standard in Japan. We did have a massage chair in the room though which was amazing & definitely made up for the size of the room. The bed was comfortable & there was a mini fridge, however no microwave. We did find the room extremely stuffy though, there was a temperature control in the room but it wouldn’t go down low enough to get air flow in the room. Luckily we had a room where we were able to open to window, however that let a bit of street noise in. The hotel staff were all very friendly & there is a free coffee machine in the lobby which was a nice amenity. Overall, this hotel is a great option if you want to stay close to Downtown Kyoto at a reasonable price!

Not too bad, but facilities were not quite 3-star
Location was a little bit far from either city centre or the most popular attractions. Staff are extremely welcoming and polite/kind. Cleanness maintained well. The facilities are somehow lower than what I would expect from a 3-star hotel, it feels like Ibis' or Travelodge's pre-build pods; the window was difficult to open at the first time, and you cannot control the air-con by yourself.
