A smaller hotel with a comfortable atmosphere.
The reception on both checking in and checking out at the front desk was helpful and natural in making one welcome. It also provided the additional knowledge needed for eating places in the area and taxi service .

Close proximity to Royal Albert Hall
We stayed at the Gainsborough due to its close proximity to The Royal Albert Hall. On arrival the staff were very friendly. After our great evening we went to the bar where a lovely lady made our evening. She was bright and bubbly. We slept well, room was well equipped for our one night. Thank you.

Okay, but ..
Service was excellent. Location excellent in proximity to Tube, museums, restaurants, etc. On the other hand, the room was roughly 4 times larger than the twin mattress . The mattress was firm as a rock. Of my five nights, the first three I averaged 1 hour of sleep. I'll just say the mattress and I were not a good fit. The square bathroom sink was the size of a small shoebox - not at all practical. The shower flow was barely existant in the handheld. The heated bathroom floor was nice, but I'll take a good nights sleep and a better shower any day of the week.

Excellent base for museums and RAH
Friendly staff and very clean. Convenient for Museums and Royal Albert Hall. Plenty of eating places around too. I stayed in a single room and the only downside was the tiny shower - I'm 5' 9" tall of average build and it was a very tight squeeze. That apart, would thoroughly recommend.

WORST-UNSAFE FOR WOMEN
This hotel is THE WORST! I recently booked my college aged daughter who was on her first solo trip to London. She called me in the middle of the night crying as she could not sleep. There was a tremendous amount of noise and commotion coming from the hallways and at some point, she thought someone was trying to break into her room! There was no double bolt on the door which is ludicrous in this day and age. Street noise was constant. To top it off, the walls started shaking from the elevator shafts!!! She could not sleep from fright, noise and unresponsive management. We finally had to check her out and check her into another hotel in the middle of the night. After getting in touch with management to get any kind of refund, we have heard NOTHING. This is the absolute worst hotel- this is after a "double upgraded" room which basically meant, she moved from some basement level room (we shudder at what is down there!) to the first floor. The only redeeming thing is the location but location does not make up for a frightening, sleepless night. Definitely if you are a single female traveler, be very, very wary. Never again. I never write reviews so I hope that this review is taken seriously. Do not get sucked into the cheap prices. It just isn't worth it.
