Union Square has an upmarket, European feel, with well-heeled shoppers drifting through monolithic department stores and luxury boutiques in one of the world’s foremost shopping districts. Prada, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton all do a smashing business here. Many of the restaurants offer open-air dining and eclectic, world-spanning menus, running the gamut from Californian-Indian fusion dishes prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, to Italian-style pizzas enjoyed around communal tables.
In the winter, the square’s a popular spot with native Californians who make a pilgrimage to see the giant Christmas tree and outdoor ice skating rink. Union Square’s theater district is also worth a journey, as it’s home to the famed American Conservatory Theater.

The Stratford Hotel in Union Square is extremely well located, close to the center of the city where you can grab public transportation everywhere. There is even a BART stop close by for those coming from the airport. The hotel itself is small but cozy. Breakfast consists of toasts and coffee so plan accordingly. Front desk was fast and efficient, they also speak spanish if necessary. If you stay on this hotel, make sure not too stray below Market street as it's quite shady, however, if you stay within Union Square or go North or East to the financial area you will be fine and it's always well lit and populated.

Front desk staff very helpful. Very close to shops and Union Square. Cable car stop just out the door. Room quiet and very warm. For the price would recommend highly.

This hotel is in a great location. It is only half a block away from Union Square and only about 2-3 blocks away from the BART station at Powell. You can also walk out of the hotel and hop on the cable cars to take you anywhere too. The rooms are really small for the singles, but the bathroom was a decent size. I would stay here again. For the price it's great! I usually don't spend a lot of my time in the hotel anyway. All I need is a clean bed and shower.

Small room but clean and comfortable. Walking distance to most sites, Moscone Center, Union Sq., shopping, Chinatown. Continental breakfast was adequate.

Great location. You couldn't ask for better spot. But the parking is $30 a night ($27 plus taxes and fees). The room is really really tiny.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location. It is right in Union Square and you have very good transportation around San Francisco from this point and to this point. Our room was small and when we got there the sheets were dirty. We had to change them because at that time there was only one person in the hotel. The next morning the lights in the bathroom stopped working. And also for a few nights our heater wasn't working. Staff was unfriendly except for the supervisor (Jack) I think that really helped us with good tips and directions.

The Stratford Hotel is a gem. It is very close to shopping, transportation, convention centers, restaurants... and priced economically. OK, my room was small but I did not expect to spend much time in m room - I was in San Francisco! The management team and staff accomodated my requests in a couretous and timely manner. All-in-all: a great place to stay in downtown San Francisco on a limited budget.

We liked this hotel a lot. It's located in the middle of a very fun and busy neighborhood and only a ten minute walk from the convention center. The rooms were small but clean. Good wifi too. The only thing I didn't like was the shower. It is tiny and has a flow-restricting shower head that barely gets you wet. Other than that, it's great!

loved the location, very convenient and comfortable. Privacy is minimal but not to the point where it is uncomfortable. I would totally book at the Stratford again.

We booked for two nights and stayed for another four! We so enjoyed our stay at the Stratford Hotel in San Fransisco. It is so central to everything, the cable car line right at the door, excellent eateries, coffee shops, cinema - we could not believe our luck in hitting on the Stratford as an online booking, completely ignorant of San Fransisco. The tariff not only included breakfast, but they offered afternoon tea as well - how much fun is that!
