Has Potential, I Guess
We read many good things about Union Square. I'm going to say I disagree. Yes, there are a couple nice blocks of shopping but the area is OVERRUN by homeless. It felt very unsafe, uncomfortable and dirty! The hotel itself seems to be nice. It's an old building in a downtown location so the rooms are very small. Sure, there was a fancy sink in the bathroom but it was all small. There was an adjacent restaurant, The Rambler, which was convenient. There is a gameroom in the basement which was unique. There were some basketball hoops, a ski ball machine, pool table and other things, all "free" with the $35 facility charge. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. The pillows were those flimsy faux feather pillows that just sink in and provide no support. The HVAC was the major issue. When we checked in, the room seemed fine temperature wise. We went shopping and came back to change for dinner and it seemed warmer. I checked and the AC was set to auto at 70 degrees. After being out we came back and quickly went to sleep. I then proceeded to toss and turn all night. At some point I turned the AC down to 66. When the alarm finally went off I could see why we felt so uncomfortable. It was 78 degrees in the room!!! I notified the front desk when checking out and showed him this picture and he asked if we called Engineering? Well we weren't going to do that in the middle of the night. He refunded facility charge but in the end we greatly overpaid for a lackluster area

Rude Reception Staff, Sub-Par Experience
Average 3-star hotel. Very average stay. Dealt with very rude and dismissive staff at check-in who gave me attitude when I asked them to clarify why I was being charged a rate over and above what I had reserved. Asked to speak to manager but the request was deliberately ignored. Given the worst room in the hotel (right next to lift and directly next to stairway leading down into very noisy reception). Made to wait 15 minutes deliberately so ended up dragging 2 large suitcases via 2 different lifts to my room which was petty and disgusting behavior by reception staff. No apologies at checkout for attempting to charge me the wrong price or giving me massive attitude. At checkout, I was billed $300 less than what I had been told at check-in....and yet the front desk girl at check-in repeatedly told me I couldn't do maths when I was checking in and asking her to clarify the pricing. Bed was old and sunken. Very uncomfortable. Carpets worn. Overall, very 3-star experience. Young bell boy was lovely and the only one apologetic about the treatment I'd experienced. I travel a lot and stay in a lot of hotels (have also worked in one) and this is the first time I'm inclined to leave a negative review. Service staff have zero idea about customer service or how to run a hotel. Stay elsewhere.

Such a hip & cool hotel. The staff was lovely. The restaurant, bar & game room were all awesome! Hotel was centrally located & it was very easy to walk places or take an uber.
