Cheap Areas to Stay in Seoul

Seoul's allure includes postcard-perfect Joseon palaces for culture vultures and shutterbugs, dizzying shopping streets for bargain hunters, and a slew of street food stalls and 24-hour Korean BBQ joints for foodies. There's plenty of budget accommodation for those who want to save their cash for the shopping. Jongno has several hanok (traditional Korean home) guesthouses, and the district is home to many cultural and historic attractions. Those who are coming for the fashion and beauty bargains can pick a hostel in Myeongdong, a renowned shopping district, or Dongdaemun, which boasts a lively night market.

Cheap Hotels in Seoul

Conveniently located near a subway station and an airport bus stop, GS Hotel provides simple digs that are on the small side. Families and groups can stay in rooms that sleep up to 6 people and feature sitting and dining areas. Wi-Fi is free and reliable. K-Guesthouse Myeongdong offers limited amenities apart from its rooms, which are rather compact, but the fantastic service and excellent location make it a great choice for travellers. Rooms with bunk beds are available. You can also book one of the casual rooms at Hotel MIDO Myeongdong, where the perks include a complimentary breakfast buffet.

Where to find cheap food in Seoul

Head to Gwangjang Market for both shopping and snacking – it's a massive street market where you'll find cheap souvenirs, clothes, and textiles, as well as a mouth-watering spread of Korean street food and fresh seafood. Don't miss the Korean BBQ experience, which will fill you up without emptying your wallet. Seoul has plenty of BBQ restaurants that are open round the clock, so you can satisfy late-night hunger pangs at places other than 24-hour convenience stores. If you need a break from shopping, the city also has a plethora of cosy coffee shops and themed cafés that serve tasty, Instagram-worthy drinks and pastries at reasonable prices.

Cheap Things to do in Seoul

Shoppers who want to hit the ground running can head straight for the Myeongdong shopping district, a bustling area with large department stores, independent boutiques, and cheap roadside stalls. You'll find virtually every brand of Korean cosmetics there. Check out Dongdaemun night market for Korean fashion, or the quaint Insadong area for souvenirs and local handicrafts. For a dose of culture and history, visit the 15th-century Changdeokgung Palace, widely considered the most beautiful of Seoul's Joseon palaces. Bukchon Hanok Village is a complex of around 900 traditional Korean houses. Swing by the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center for a lesson on the village's ties to the Joseon Dynasty, then stroll along the lanes and take snapshots with the classic pagoda roofs in the foreground and Seoul's modern skyline visible in the distance. For even more striking photos in Seoul, rent a hanbok for a few hours. Wearing the traditional Korean costume also gets you into certain shrines and palaces for free.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Seoul

Seoul's extensive subway system is one of the busiest in the world, but don't be intimidated by this 18-line network. It's the best way to get around the South Korean capital, and there are English signs in the stations and trains. Instead of purchasing single-journey tickets each time, get a T-Money top-up card for convenience and trip discounts. You can use this card on buses and in some convenience stores, too. Seoul's buses are color-coded. Tourists will usually take the yellow buses, which ply popular sightseeing attractions. Green buses link the suburbs with subway stations. Note that buses don't always have English information or announcements.
