Find out more about Fukuoka

Fukuoka Hotels

Fukuoka is a shimmering coastal city set on the sun-washed northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island. The city blends glitzy high-rise buildings and elegant modern museums with ancient stone shrines and temples. Lovers of local culture will go wild for Fukuoka’s traditional matsuri festivals, while foodies can dine in a range of authentic Kyushu-cuisine restaurants. What’s more, the hotels in Fukuoka range from budget inns to luxury retreats, meaning that this buzzing city can be enjoyed by all.

Things to see

Start your sun-kissed Fukuoka day by seeing some of the city’s top architectural attractions. Begin at the Fukuoka Tower, an immense structure built with triangular cross-section pattern of glittering mirrors. Rise to the 120 metre-high observation deck, and enjoy a birds-eye view over the sprawling city below. After, take in some old-world architecture and local heritage at Fukuoka Castle, a 17th century complex of stone battlements, deep moats, and high-walled turrets. The adjoining grounds, stippled with cherry trees, are perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll. Later, art-fiends should check out the Fukuoka Art Museum, a sweeping red-stone structure that houses contemporary Asian and European paintings. History buffs can cap off their day within the immense mirrored-glass and wood-framed walls of the Kyushu National Museum, which displays ancient Kyushu ceramics. Shoppers, meanwhile, will want to splurge in the ritzy stores of the Canal City Hakata complex.

Hotels in Fukuoka

The hotels in Fukuoka can cater to all types of travellers and tourists. Backpackers and city explorers should check out the 2 star Fukuoka hotels such as Kia Ora BudgetStay, which provide stylish and spacious shared rooms, complete with secure luggage storage and air conditioning - all at a low price. For something slightly snazzier, stay in one of the 3 star hotels in Fukuoka. These hotels offer large ensuite rooms with homely touches like bathrobes and refrigerators. For complete dining convenience, they also offer in-house restaurants. If you’re after a slice of urban luxury, stay in a 4 star Fukuoka hotel such as Hotel New Otani Hakata, and enjoy fine dining and concierge service.

Where to stay

Families looking for a fun and exciting neighbourhood should stay near the Nasaku entertainment district. This vast riverfront promenade sings with international eateries, cinemas, and boutiques, providing endless entertainment for the whole family. If you’re after some peace and quiet, however, and enjoy an upper-end resort atmosphere, stay near the beachside Nishiku district in western Fukuoka, which offers immediate access to the coast’s soft golden sands and warm aquamarine waters. Late-night partygoers and trendy fashionistas should stay in the youthful Tenjin neighbourhood in central Fukuoka, which glows with neon-washed bars, clubs, and hip hangouts.

How to get to Fukuoka

Fukuoka is easily reached by air, with the city’s airport based just 7 kilometres from the centre. The airport does serve a couple of transpacific flights, and direct flights to and from mainland China. Likely, however, the easiest way to arrive is to first catch a flight to Tokyo’s Haneda or Narita international airports. These bustling hubs of international aviation receive direct year-round flights from top destinations like Los Angeles, Paris, London, and Amsterdam. Connecting flights to Fukuoka Airport take around 2 hours. From the airport, you can hop on a speedy 10 minute subway to the centre, or catch a cab.
