Cheap Areas to Stay in Osaka

A veritable smorgasbord of shopping, culinary, and cultural delights, Japan's second most populated city is generally divided into 2 main sections: Minami, which consists of Tennoji and the Namba shopping district, and Kita, which covers the Umeda commercial zone. If you're travelling on a budget, Minami is the better choice for accommodation. Consider one of the capsule hotels or cheap inns scattered across Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, where shopping bargains and street food are within easy reach. Options in Tennoji provide excellent transport links and are near the sprawling Tennoji Park and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts.

Cheap Hotels in Osaka

Just 8 minutes' walk from the Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Arcade, Grand Sauna Shinsaibashi provides gender-segregated private and shared capsule rooms. Facilities include a restaurant, a sauna, and free Wi-Fi. Note that you have to check out daily, even if you're staying for more than one night. At Drop Inn Osaka, you can choose between mixed or female-only dorms with bunk beds, or Japanese-style private rooms with futon bedding. Bathrooms are shared, and there's a guest kitchen. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. Meanwhile, the capsule rooms at First Cabin Midousuji-Namba are a tad larger than usual, giving you enough room to move around. There's a sauna and a bar.

Where to find cheap food in Osaka

Osaka is akin to one enormous kitchen, so don't forget your appetite. The city boasts over 100 Michelin-starred restaurants, but rest assured you'll find a great spread of cheap eats, too. Try kushikatsu (breaded, deep-fried meat or veggies on skewers) in the old, gritty neighbourhood of Shinsekai, where you'll find these affordable snacks in several 24-hour joints. Then, check out the street food scene in Dotonbori, where you can sample okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancakes), takoyaki, and a roadside bowl of piping hot ramen. If you're in one of Osaka's department stores, head to the basement for a wide selection of reasonably priced delicacies.

Cheap Things to do in Osaka

Shopaholics in search of fashion bargains should swing by the 2.6-km Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street, purportedly the longest of its kind in Japan. Shinsaibashi-suji district offers a variety of shopping experiences, from brand-name boutiques to small, inexpensive kiosks, while the nearby Amerikamura commercial hub caters more to the young and hip. Similar to Tokyo's Akihabara district, Nipponbashi, also called Den Den Town, is the place to go for discounted electronics and otaku culture. There's more to Osaka than shopping, of course, and culture vultures should not miss the 16th-century Osaka Castle, one of Japan's key historical landmarks, or Shitennoji Temple, a Buddhist temple built by a prince in 593. In both attractions, the grounds are free to explore but there's a reasonable fee to enter the inner structures. Osaka Castle's Nishinomaru Garden is especially divine in the springtime, when the famed cherry blossoms are in bloom.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Osaka

Osaka has several public transport options, including a Shinkansen bullet train line from Tokyo and an extensive railway and subway system. It might be worthwhile to look into the many tourist passes that are available, such as the Osaka Amazing Pass, which includes admission to over 30 attractions, as well as unlimited bus and train rides within Osaka for either a day or 2 consecutive days. The more affordable Osaka Visitors' Ticket entitles you to unlimited subway and bus rides for a day, while the Yokoso! Osaka Ticket adds discounted one-way travel from Kansai International Airport to Osaka, and a free one-way express train journey.
