Cheap Areas to Stay in Tokyo

Tokyo is a fascinating city. It stands at the forefront of edginess and cool. At the same time, it clings tightly to the age-old traditions that give this city its soul. Tourists generally have this notion that Tokyo is an expensive place to visit, but that's not true at all. Asakusa, the historical centre of Old Tokyo, has a number of backpacker hostels and capsule hotels. The Ueno District, home to Tokyo's major museums and cultural sites, also has its share of cheap Tokyo hotels. You can also find discount hotels in bustling Shinjuku, amidst its shopping malls and skyscrapers.

Cheap Hotels in Tokyo

Tokyo Ginza Bay Hotel is an affordable capsule hotel in upscale Ginza. Its facilities include free Wi-Fi and self-service laundry. It's conveniently located near many Ginza shopping centres. Hotel MyStays Kanda in Chiyoda is a cosy hotel offering rooms at reasonable rates. It's a short distance from the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Akihabara Electric Town. The hotel also offers free Wi-Fi and a self-service laundry. Capsule Hotel Anshin Oyado Premier Tokyo is a male-only, budget-friendly hotel in Shinjuku. This hotel is only a short distance away from Shinjuku Station. Its amenities include breakfast and free Wi-Fi, as well as self-service laundry facilities.

Where to find cheap food in Tokyo

Eating out can be an expensive activity in Tokyo, but there are plenty of ways you can eat good food in the city without breaking your budget. Convenience stores, for one, have a wide variety of ready-to-eat meals. From bento boxes to sandwiches and salads, you can eat your fill on the cheap at these stores. Almost every street corner in Tokyo has a convenience store. You can also eat on a budget at noodle bars and curry shops. At these shops, you can enjoy authentic ramen and curry rice. Just like convenience stores, you can find these shops near street corners and subway stations.

Cheap Things to do in Tokyo

Tokyo has plenty of attractions you can enjoy for free. Among them are the city's numerous parks. The park paths around the Imperial Palace in particular are a favourite amongst early-morning joggers and cyclists. If you want to see first-hand Tokyo's youth culture, go to Harajuku. There you'll find teenagers dressed in colourful and sometimes downright bizarre costumes, often doing their thing in Yoyogi Park. If you're into anime or manga, you need to visit Akihabara, the centre of otaku culture. There you'll see an explosion of shops dedicated to all things anime and manga, such as comics stores and maid cafés. To experience a slice of Tokyo life, head on to Shinjuku to watch the famous Shinjuku scramble. You can even join the thousands of Tokyoites crossing the street if you dare. Temple hopping is another free thing you can do in Tokyo. Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple, is a must-see.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Tokyo

The railway is the primary mode of transport within Tokyo. Tokyo is considered to have one of the most extensive railway systems in the world. The JR Yamanote railway line runs in a loop around the city centre. To commute within the area enclosed by the Yamanote, you can take the subway. Tokyo's different subway lines connect to the Yamanote. The few districts not covered by Tokyo's railway and subway systems are served by buses. Tokyo is also a pleasant place for walking, so try to walk whenever you can. You can also rent bikes at youth hostels.
