Five Star Hotels in Kyoto

Kyoto - an expansive, bustling city set in the central region of Japan’s main Honshu Island - offers a window into the country’s old-world culture. Winding cherry tree-lined streets lead to majestic gold-capped temples and mystical Shinto shrines. In some areas, you might spot a Geisha - clad in flowery silk gowns - glide past traditional timbered teahouses. Kyoto also overflows with high-end entertainment - from dazzling designer shopping to fine-dining fusion restaurants.

Things to see

Begin your bright Kyoto morning with a tranquil trip to a couple of the city’s top temples and shrines. The Zen Buddhist Kinkaku-ji temple, at the northwestern end of the city, is lavishly drenched in glimmering gold-leaf, and surrounded by tall deep-green Japanese cypress trees. After, head over to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, a 1st century shrine based at the bottom of a misty forest-covered mountain. Marvel at the shrine’s many bright orange torii - large curved-timber gateways - which forge twisting paths through the forest. In the afternoon, treat yourself to some upscale shopping along central Shijo Street. Here, you’ll discover glitzy-modern department stores full of cosmetics, electronics, and designer fashion emporiums. For a taste of traditional Japanese shopping, head to the coiling streets of the eastern Higashiyama district, which are crowded with bijou boutiques selling fine yukata robes, rustic antiques, and refined washi - traditional Japanese paper.

Hotels in Kyoto

Travellers looking for luxurious accommodation should stay in one of the ritzy 5 star hotels in Kyoto. These grand, elegant havens overflow with indulgent amenities - from shimmering indoor pools and pampering full service spas to chic low-lit bar lounges and multiple fine-dining in-house restaurants - cooking up a mix of European and authentic Kyoto cuisine. The fancy 5 star hotels in Kyoto also boast huge air-conditioned ensuite rooms with free WiFi and enormous flat-screen TVs. You’ll enjoy impeccable service at the Kyoto 5 star hotels too, from valet parking and childcare to town-car travel and concierge assistance. The Ritz-Carlton is one of the best 5-star hotels in Kyoto.

Where to stay

If you’re looking for a true old-world Kyoto experience in a relaxed and serene setting, stay in either the Southern or Northern Higashiyama sightseeing districts, east of the central area. Both are rich with centuries-old temples, secluded rock gardens, and pond-stippled parks. While the Northern district is less crowded, the Southern district includes the Gion neighbourhood, where paper lantern-spotted streets house upscale eateries serving delicate tofu dishes. This neighbourhood also gives you your best chance of glimpsing a Geisha. For instant access to Kyoto’s top shopping, stay in the buzzing Downtown area. You’ll find plenty of polished cocktail bars here, too.

How to get to Kyoto

Kyoto doesn’t have its own international airport. Instead, it’s well-served by Kansai International Airport, based just outside of Osaka, around 100 kilometres south. Kansai serves year-round direct flights from key European cities like Paris and Amsterdam. From the airport, take a speedy Haruka Limited Express train direct to Kyoto Station, in the city’s Downtown area. This will take around 75 minutes. From the station, some 5 star Kyoto hotels will provide pick-up service. To explore the city, make use of the subway and light rail, as well as the extensive bus network. Taxis are a good option too - but traffic can sometimes be an issue.
