Four Star Hotels in Kyoto

Kyoto, based in the hilly forest-covered central region of Japan’s Honshu Island, is a sprawling old-world city full of Zen Buddhist temples, ancient shrines, and serene pond-speckled gardens. These rustic relics, paired with Kyoto’s heritage museums and galleries, will provide endless enjoyment for culture-vultures. Splurging shoppers will love Kyoto’s mix of upscale department stores and independent boutiques, while nightlife-enthusiasts will go wild for central Kyoto’s ritzy cocktail bars and clubs.

Things to see

Art-fiends should start their day at the grand Kyoto National Museum, a vast red and white building bordering shrine-studded gardens. The museum is dedicated to pre-modern Japanese and Asian art, showcasing seemingly-endless displays of stone sculptures and delicately-carved lacquerware. After, serious art-fans should visit the National Museum of Modern Art - MoMAK - which showcases 20th century photography, paintings, and rotating contemporary exhibitions. In the afternoon, explore Kyoto’s temples and shrines - the Buddhist Kinkaku-ji should be top of your list. This tiered temple is drenched in shimmering gold-leaf, which gleams in the sunlight and casts a dazzling reflection in the adjacent blue-green pool. Shoppers, meanwhile, can indulge themselves along the central Shijo Street, which is chock-full of upper-end department stores, designer fashion boutiques, and electronics outlets. Finish your day in the thrumming Gion neighbourhood - the city’s centuries-old entertainment district - where you might just spot an elusive Geisha.

Hotels in Kyoto

There is an abundance of flashy 4 star hotels in Kyoto, perfect for city explorers who need a relaxing haven to retire to after a long day of sightseeing. These 4 star Kyoto hotels boast enormous air-conditioned ensuite rooms with stellar city views and free WiFi. You’ll also enjoy multiple in-house restaurants, which serve a range of food - from classic Kyoto tofu dishes to European cuisine. Some of the 4 star hotels in Kyoto boast indulgent full-service spas - with saunas, massage rooms, and fitness centres. Kyoto’s 4 star hotels also provide impeccable concierge service, and their front desks offer gattentive 24 hour assistance.

Where to stay

The central and Downtown areas of Kyoto are the most modern, booming, and built-up. These areas are perfect for high-end shoppers and lavish partygoers, as the bustling streets sing with department stores, sake bars, and polished cocktail lounges. The Northern Higashiyama district, east of the centre, is ideal for families, where uncrowded streets - lined with arching cherry trees - twist and turn around temples, Zen gardens, and Shinto shrines. The Southern Higashiyama district - which includes Gion - is a little busier, but boasts a similarly leafy and historic atmosphere. Here, shoppers will find tiny stores selling classic Kyoto handicrafts, aromatic teas, and silk robes.

How to get to Kyoto

Fly from one of several top European destinations - including Paris and Amsterdam - direct to Kansai International Airport, based just outside of Osaka, 100 kilometres south of Kyoto. From there, hop on a Haruka Limited Express train straight to Kyoto Station, in the city’s Downtown area. This relaxing ride will take a mere 75 minutes. From the station, many 4 star Kyoto hotels provide pick-up service. The city’s mix of subway lines, light rail, and buses will carry you wherever you need to go - taxis are a viable option too, but best avoided during rush hour.
