Where to stay in Alghero

Alghero Hotels

Alghero is a buzzing midsize town set on the shimmering sun-kissed shores of northwestern Sardinia. The town - hemmed-in by sandy-coloured 16th century stone walls - boasts an impressive array of architectural marvels, like the imposing Gothic cathedral. There’s an abundance of natural wonder in Alghero too - wine-connoisseurs can tour the surrounding sweeping vineyards, while nature-buffs can explore Alghero’s weird and wonderful cave formations. To cap it off, Alghero offers a spread of soft silky beachfront.

Things to see

Wake up to the bright azure Alghero skies and start your sunny morning by seeing the town’s top architectural and heritage sites. Begin at the Alghero Cathedral, based in the centre. This enormous sanctuary dates back to 1530, and showcases a riveting range of styles. Marvel at the Catalan-Gothic style chapels and domineering bell-tower, before gazing at the sleek-white Neo-Classical colonnades on the west front, added in the 19th century. After, architecture enthusiasts can continue their town tour by walking along the fortified walls and visiting the cylindrical towers. For a mysterious and magical afternoon, take a boat tour to Neptune’s Grotto, an enchanting cave of other-worldly stalagmites and stalactites that winds deep within a coastal cliff. After, climb the 600 stone steps from the cave to the cliff-top to enjoy exceptionally crystal-clear ocean views. Finally, finish your day at the Maria Pia Beach - a stretch of white-gold sand and shady tree-banks beside that lead to aquamarine waters.

Where to stay

If you’re looking for a taste of authentic local charm, then stay in central Alghero. The winding narrow streets are full of old-world white-washed buildings and Gothic marvels, creating a rustic atmosphere. Splurging shoppers can bargain-hunt in the quaint boutiques and farmers markets, while foodies can dine on sizzling shrimp in the fresh seafood restaurants. Stay north of the old town centre, in the Lido neighbourhood, for a more modern resort vibe with immediate beachfront access. While this area isn’t especially noisy, if you’d prefer utter tranquillity, stay further north near green-washed Fertilla.

How to get to Alghero

Alghero Airport is based just 10 kilometres from the town centre. This small but buzzing airport serves many seasonal flights from top European destinations, and a handful of handy year-round flights from places like London and Rome. From the airport, it’s quick and convenient to hop in a cab to your hotel. Alternatively, hire a car onsite and drive the 15 minutes south to the centre. Once there, much of the town centre can be explored on foot, but it’s handy to have a car - particularly for visiting the nearby beaches.
