Find out more about Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station Hotels

Kyoto, based in the central area of Japan’s Honshu Island, is a vast old-world city overflowing with traditional Buddhist temples, mossy stone shrines, and pristine square-shaped Zen gardens. But the city isn’t all about history and heritage - it also boasts thunderous downtown and central areas that sing with restaurants, bouncing bars, and - importantly - department stores. One of the city’s shopping hotspots is contained within the glitzy Kyoto Station, a 15 storey-tall mirror-windowed structure in central Kyoto.

Things to see

Bargain-hunters and splurging shoppers should begin their busy morning by exploring the many retail wonders that Kyoto Station has to offer. Wander through the station’s main concourse - where architecture-enthusiasts will appreciate the futuristic exposed steel beamed roof - to the western portion of the building. Here, you’ll find a 10 storey department store, chock-full of flashy fashion, electronics, and cosmetic boutiques. After, head to the Porta Underground Shopping Mall, a subterranean stretch of brand-name stores and international eateries. As the afternoon rolls around, treat yourself to some traditional Kyoto culture at the Kinkaku-ji, a Buddhist temple boasting a bright gold-leaf facade, based in a serene leafy park. Finish your day at the 1st century Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine, and stroll through its fire-orange torii - wide timber gateways that twist and turn up the adjacent mountain, through the thick deep-green forest.

Where to stay

The endless array of multinational, fusion, and classic Kyoto-cuisine restaurants in the area are also guaranteed to please foodies. Nighthawks looking for labyrinth-like neon-washed streets lined with sake bars and thumping clubs should stay slightly north of Kyoto Station, in the Downtown area. For a peaceful and more family-friendly setting, stay in the Northern Higashiyama district. This open, tree-covered area is speckled by temples, shrines, and tranquil gardens.

How to get to Kyoto Station

Kyoto doesn’t have its own international airport, however it is well-served by Osaka’s Kansai International Airport, located 100 kilometres south. The airport serves flights from key European cities, like Amsterdam and Paris. From Kansai, catch a Haruka Limited Express train, which cruises straight from the airport to Kyoto Station in around 75 minutes. Once there, you’ll find that Kyoto’s range of public transport - which includes a subway system, light rail, and bus network - will get you just about anywhere you need to go in the city. Cycling is also a great way to travel short distances, particularly in the leafy Northern and Southern Higashiyama districts.
