Find out more about Walking Street

Walking Street Hotels

When you think of a Thai ‘Walking Street’, it inevitably conjures up images of the neon-drenched hedonist havens of Pattaya and Phuket – known for their rowdy bars and red light naughtiness. Krabi’s Walking Street however is an altogether more wholesome experience - where the only vice you’ll find is a jolly good bargain. Come the weekend the bustling market is the heart and soul of the town centre, where sizzling food stands serve up tasty local fare, and stalls overflow with fashion, art, and souvenirs.

Things to see

The province’s capital town Krabi is home to two popular night markets, but nowhere draws in the crowds quite like Walking Street. Luring in tourists and locals alike, you can find all-kinds-of-everything here, and at much cheaper prices than in the nearby resorts. Fumigated with tempting aromas, the central plaza is where you’ll find a cornucopia of food stalls, offering everything from chicken satays and BBQ fish, to a sweet selection of desserts.

Cradled up high amidst lush rainforest, a short journey northeast of town, you’ll find Tiger Cave Temple. The Buddhist haven is reached by an arduous climb up 1,237 steps, but rewards visitors with breath-taking views, tiger paw ‘prints’, and a trove of golden Buddha statues. An excursion to the Ko Phi Phi Viewpoint is a must. Ferries head out to the idyllic islands daily from Krabi, and depart directly from the town’s passenger pier. Once there, a half hour hike upwards culminates in a gawp-worthy panorama of the archetypal Thai paradise.

Hotels in Walking Street

The hotels in Walking Street’s vicinity are dotted about Krabi’s characterful downtown area. Whilst you won’t find any 5-star beach resorts here, you’ll have a wealth of budget-friendly accommodation to choose from. Costing a fraction of what the tourist areas charge, you can take your pick from stylish full-service establishments offering on-site restaurants and bars, to cheap and cheerful guesthouses, and back to basics hostels. The hotels in Walking Street’s immediate area generally offer more frills the more you pay, but rooms usually come equipped with televisions, WiFi, and air conditioning. Just Fine Krabi and Apo Hotel are two of the best options for visitors.

Where to stay

Whilst many holidaymakers make a beeline for the beach resorts of Ao Nang or West Railay Beach, Krabi Province’s capital town still has plenty to offer. Alongside its lively local atmosphere, free of glossy tourist traps, the accommodation, dining, shopping, and nightlife here all come a whole lot cheaper. What’s more, you don’t have to miss out on the blissful beaches either. Ferries and long-tail boats regularly depart from Krabi, and whisk day-trippers out to idyllic hotspots like the Phi Phi Islands, and Railay Beach - with its pristine white sand and towering limestone cliffs.

How to get to Walking Street

Anyone flying to the region will more than likely be touching down at Krabi International Airport. A well-connected hub, it provides travel links to numerous destinations in Asia, including regular services from major airports like Kuala Lumpur International, and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi. As such, it should be no problem if you’re coming from further away and need a connecting flight. Once you’ve arrived it’s just a 15-minute or so drive into town from the airport. You’ll find no shortage of taxis outside the terminal, with shared minibuses providing a slightly cheaper option. Alternatively, some hotels in Walking Street’s vicinity provide transfers with prior arrangement.
