What to do in Kata Beach

Kata Beach Hotels

With the sound of birds chattering in the forested mountains and the surf gently hitting the soft, pale sand, this laid-back Phuket beach is designed for luxurious, romantic relaxation. Set on the west of the island, just south of Karon Beach, Kata benefits from sensational sunsets, when the sky is painted in deep, tropical hues – the perfect view for cocktail sipping and barbecued suppers on the beach. It’s a place without any need for razzle-dazzle; it simply sweeps you away.

Things to see

Standing on the warm sand of Kata Beach, letting the fine grains slip between your toes, the view in every direction is one of sheer natural beauty. There’s no need to do anything for a while except relax on a lounger or enjoy a snorkelling session in the clear water. After spending some time in this blissed-out state, the lure of the mystic, almost Jurassic-like mountains might start to call. On top of one of the closest mountains to Kata Beach sits Big Buddha, an enormous statue completely covered in shimmering white jade – a figure so luminous it forces you to wear sunglasses in its presence. If you’ve got children with you and they’re clamouring for something to do, Dino Park Mini Golf is great for kids and big kids alike. It’s an immersive experience, where you have to hit balls across rivers, and ward off dinosaurs at every hole.

Hotels in Kata Beach

There are several 5-star, luxury hotels in Kata Beach, and it’s the perfect place for a high-class getaway. You’ll stay in a beautiful suite or villa, with a balcony overlooking the sea. Extra touches of luxury include minibars, iPod docks, and a nightly turndown service. Some of these luxury Kata Beach hotels have infinity pools, and all have outdoor areas with swimming pools and loungers, where you can relax, while the children are occupied with supervised activities. There are numerous boutique hotels in Kata Beach too, offering stylish air-conditioned rooms, often with onsite pools and restaurants, available at cheap prices.

Where to stay

The southern end of Kata Beach is where the majority of the luxury resorts are located. Here, overlooking the sea, and with everything you need onsite, you might find it hard to leave the resort, but it’s easy to get around the southern part of the island here, and you’ll be surrounded by sea on one side and mountains on the other, so it’s perfect for a relaxed, beach paradise getaway. In the main part of Kata Beach, you’ll find plenty of mid-range and cheap hotels, including guesthouses and hostels, with easy access to both Kata beach and Karon beach.

How to get to Kata Beach

From Phuket International Airport, it takes about an hour to reach Kata Beach by taxi or direct hotel shuttle. There’s also a good bus service which runs from the airport to the western beaches, though it takes longer and you may need an onward taxi to your Kata Beach hotel. Buses also run from Kata Beach to Phuket Town, the main transit hub on the island, while taxis, tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are easy to find. If you want to get out and explore the island, you can hire your own motorbike to whiz up and down the mountains easily.
