Gwanghwamun Hotels

In the cultural heartland of central Seoul, Gwanghwamun is a district bursting with ornate palaces and museums of national importance just waiting to be explored. It’s a place where tranquil gardens and generous plazas meet thronging intersections, where office workers stream in and out of shiny towers. On break-times though, the pace slows for lounging and people-watching. For visitors, there’s a lot to see just in this small district, and from folk history to modern art, it’s all worth savouring.

Things to see

Step into the heart of Korea’s royal court at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest most opulent of the Five Grand Palaces in Seoul. It’s certainly impressive, and as you leave behind the buzz of fast-paced modernity, entering a world of eras past, with echoes of emperors and timeless, tranquil gardens. In one area of the palace complex, the National Folk Museum can be found. This beehive-like, tiered pagoda structure holds a wealth of artefacts from across the ages, giving an insight into the simpler community life that once existed in the centre of Seoul. Just to the south, the monumental statue of national hero, Admiral Yi Sun Sin, stands against a dramatic mountain backdrop, and is a proud symbol for Seoulites. For a real cultural spectacle, take in a live performance at the Sejong Cultural Center, which puts on historical plays and world-class operas in its majestic and regal theatre space.

Where to stay

The southern area, close to Seoul City Hall, offers the best of the luxury hotels in Gwanghwamun, and it puts you right at the heart of downtown Seoul, where glittering skyscrapers and entertainment districts blazing with neon lights show off the futuristic spirit of the city. To immerse yourself in traditional Seoul, stay in the northern part of Gwanghwamun, near the Gyeongbokgung Palace. You can snap up a stay in an independent guesthouse for a great price, enjoying the simple, wooden architecture and serene, minimalist style. Many of Seoul’s top cultural attractions, including many national museums, are within walking distance.

How to get to Gwanghwamun

Given its central location within Seoul, it couldn’t be easier to get here. It’s exceptionally well-connected by metro, with line 5 serving the central Gwanghwamun Station, while Gyeongbokgung Palace has its own stop on line 3. If you’re staying in the southern area of Gwanghwamun, then line 1 to City Hall or Jonggak is the best option. Transport from Incheon International Airport is quick and easy – just take the express train to Seoul Station, which takes about 40 minutes, and from there it’s just a few minutes on the metro.
