Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade Hotels

Stretching out over almost 600 metres long, and covered by a curved, near-transparent roof, the Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade is Osaka’s most prestigious and iconic retail destination. It’s a bona fide shopper’s paradise, densely packed with an alluring mixture of leading international brand names, quirky local boutiques, and irresistible cafés and eateries. The arcade is but one of the glistening jewels in the crown of the Minami, or Namba, district. This sprawling, irrepressibly energetic neighbourhood is the beating heart of modern Osaka, with its soaring skyscrapers, dazzling neon billboards, and cosmopolitan nightlife.

Things to see

You could easily spend an entire day, and indeed your whole holiday budget, in the gleaming stores of Shinsaibashi. But be sure to set aside some time to explore the area’s quirkier attractions. Amerikamura, or American Village, is an eccentric celebration of all things USA, and the epicentre of Osaka’s youth culture. It’s easy enough to spot – just look out for the rooftop replica of the Statue of Liberty, and the stars-and-stripes flags adorning most shopfronts. Bargain hunters will love its achingly hip second hand shops – you may lay your hands on some rare import records, or the perfect pair of vintage-style jeans.

Nipponbashi is Osaka’s answer to Tokyo’s world-renowned Akihabara area. Originally a shopping district specialising in consumer electronics, it’s evolved into a haven for proud pop culture geeks of all persuasions. You’ll find treasure-filled retro video games stores, endless supplies of anime and manga, and delightfully bizarre cosplay cafés.
