Where to stay in London - Big Ben

Big Ben Hotels

Resplendent in its gothic grandeur and chiming out the hours as London life races past, Big Ben towers above the seat of British democracy and power. Smart-suited politicians disappear into the hallowed Westminster halls, while red double-decker buses cruise the bridge, captured in a hundred camera shutters in the quintessential image of London. St Paul’s Cathedral shines in the distance, while the South Bank beckons with its galleries and theatres, but lingering awhile on Westminster Bridge is no bad thing either.

Things to see

The views from Westminster Bridge are something to be savoured, so it hardly matters that the crowds meander slowly from one side of the river to the other, skirting around bagpipe players, human statues, and a whole variety of other street performers. Find a spot along the railings and enjoy watching the boats drift by against the London skyline. Skyscrapers shimmer downriver, but the main architectural attraction here is Big Ben itself, and the adjoining Houses of Parliament You can get a sneak peek into the inner sanctum of British politics on a guided tour of the splendid gilded halls, and why not pause for a classic afternoon tea on the terrace? It’s the most refined way imaginable to enjoy the river views at leisure. After, you can pop round the corner to Westminster Abbey, the most regal of all gothic churches, as the site of royal weddings and coronations.
