Ocean Beach Hotels

Ocean Beach is a sweeping white-gold stretch of sand set on sun-kissed San Francisco’s west coast, about 6 miles from buzzing Downtown. This wide and uncrowded beach stretches up to Land’s End, a rocky tree-studded recreation area that provides crystal clear views across the towering fire-orange Golden Gate Bridge and glistening San Francisco Bay. A short distance inland from the beach, museums, parks, and trendy boutiques abound.

Things to see

Begin your relaxing Ocean Beach morning by wandering over to its northern point, where you’ll find Land’s End. Within these windswept fir-stippled hills - criss-crossed with hiking trails - discover the Legion of Honour, a grand colonnaded Neoclassical museum housing fine European art, from vibrant Monet paintings to stately Rodin sculptures. If you’re travelling with the kids, head to the very southern end of Ocean Beach, where you’ll find San Francisco Zoo, a sprawling 100 acre wonderland boasting African Savannah, Cat Kingdom, and Bear Country exhibits - be sure to see the sleek Siberian tiger. In the afternoon, venture inland and explore the vast Golden Gate Park, which adjoins the beach. This 1,000 acre lake-studded oasis houses the tranquil San Francisco Botanical Garden - landscaped to resemble a traditional Japanese garden - and the Conservatory of Flowers, a palace-like Victorian greenhouse bursting with exotic flora. Finish your day at the 1.7 mile-long Golden Gate Bridge, and marvel at its Art Deco design.

Hotels in Ocean Beach

Most of the inns, motels, and hotels near Ocean Beach offer basic but affordable 2 star no-frills accommodation. These laid-back Ocean Beach hotels provide simple ensuite rooms with air conditioning and convenient free WiFi - allowing you to keep connected throughout your trip. You’ll also benefit from free parking, 24 hour front desks, and secure luggage storage - not to mention immediate beach access. Some of these Ocean Beach hotels, motels, and inns also provide airport shuttle service, so you won’t have to worry or stress about ground transportation once you arrive at San Francisco International Airport.

Where to stay

Ocean Beach is San Francisco’s top surfing spot. Because of this, the area is glossed with a beatnik surfer vibe, and surf shops and beach-themed cafes speckle the nearby streets. However, the area’s distance from thrumming Downtown gives it a peaceful residential atmosphere, and you’ll often find dog-walkers or families strolling along the sands. Families should stay at the southern end, near San Francisco Zoo, while outdoorsy-types stay at the northern point, between Land’s End and the eden-like Golden Gate Park. Hip fashionistas and bohemians looking for bouncing bars, bijou boutiques, and cool cafes should stay inland, in the Haight area.

How to get to Ocean Beach

Catch a flight from one of many top European cities - including London, Paris, and Amsterdam - direct to San Francisco International Airport, based just 17 miles from Ocean Beach. If your hotel doesn’t offer shuttle services, catch a cab from the airport and relax as you cruise along the coast to Ocean Beach - the ride should take around 25 minutes outside of traffic. Although the airport provides ground transportation in the form of a BART train, it only runs to stations in Downtown, and a taxi from Downtown to Ocean Beach is likely to take as long - and cost as much - as a taxi direct from the airport.
