Tiananmen Square Hotels

Tiananmen Square is a huge public square based in central Beijing, adjacent to the grand moat-bordered Forbidden City palace complex. Tiananmen Square has been the site of many historical Beijing events, which are marked by stone statues and monuments studded around the wide grounds. Surrounding Tiananmen Square, Beijing’s Dongcheng district houses many museums, galleries, and traditional temples. Shoppers and foodies will also find an eclectic mix of market stalls and ritzy department stores, street-cuisine vendors and upper-end restaurants.

Things to see

Begin your busy Beijing day by wandering around Tiananmen Square and visiting its neighbouring landmarks. On the eastern side of this 109-acre square, you’ll find the National Museum of China, an enormous white-faced building with neo-classical influences. Inside, discover seemingly-endless corridors displaying 13th century bronzeware, intricately-decorated porcelain, and gold-threaded jade burial suits. After, amble to the centre of Tiananmen Square and see the mighty Monument to the People’s Heroes, a 10 story obelisk inscribed with gold lettering, dedicated to the martyrs of China’s revolutionary struggles. The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong stands beside the monument - the final resting place of the former Chairman. The mausoleum - which keeps Mao’s embalmed body within a crystal coffin - is open to the public. Afterwards, spend the afternoon outside of Tiananmen Square, in the nearby Forbidden City - a vast palace complex of bright-red gateways, tiered towers, and spiritual incense-clouded halls.
